IU-Verdes denounces that Lorca is about to overcome the days with permissible ozone surpasses for the whole year (10/08/2017)

The councilor of this training, Gloria Martín, explained that in July also exceeded in Lorca the normal values of average daily concentration of PM10, particles in suspension that can penetrate to the lower respiratory tract and are behind many respiratory diseases, cardiovascular problems , And lung cancers

The councilor of IU-Greens, Gloria Martín, has warned that Lorca is about to exceed the annual maximum limit of pollution by tropospheric ozone considered permissible to not harm health.

Specifically, in the first six months of the year, there were 23 daily exceedances of the limit value for tropospheric ozone (120 micrograms / m3), according to Ecologists in Action data, when these levels can not exceed 25 days each year.

The total number of days with exceedances would be "even higher" if the World Health Organization criterion was used, which since 2005 has lowered the health protection limit value of 120 to 100 micrograms per cubic meter, Martín recalled.

According to data provided by the measuring stations of the Autonomous Community and collected by the green NGO, tropospheric ozone has exploded in recent days as a result of high temperatures, since that secondary pollutant occurs "when those emitted to the air Industry and traffic are reacting to each other thanks to sunlight and temperature. "

In the absence of knowing the definitive data of July and August, Martín augured a "black summer" for the respiratory health of the Lorca.

And breathing that substance causes an increase in the risk of acute respiratory diseases and a reduction of lung function, in addition to worsening of cardiovascular pathologies.

According to WHO data, in Spain there are about 1,800 premature deaths per year "as a result of exposure to ozone levels such as those recorded in Lorca," Martín said.

On the other hand, Lorca also exceeded in July the average values of average daily concentration of PM10 (particles in suspension that can penetrate to the respiratory tract), which reached 57 ug / m3.

For all this, IU-Greens has insisted on the need for local and regional governments to implement "emergency measures" to reduce such high levels of air pollution, such as traffic control and industrial emissions, and calls for That a specific plan is in place to control it.
