IU-Greens alert that they are drying the oak trees of the ravine of Tiata (07/09/2017)

Gloria Martín lamented the "economic waste" that entails the constant loss of trees in the city.

He also called for a "real urban reforestation plan" and the implementation of an "adoption" tree program in collaboration with the municipal schools and institutes

The Councilor of the United Left-Greens, Gloria Martín, has warned about the state of the tree on the right bank of the ravine of Tiata, between the bridge of Vallecas and the roundabout of San Fernando.

14 of the 24 oaks planted recently are drying, so the mayor asked for an "urgent" action to avoid the loss of these specimens.

Martin lamented the "economic waste" of constant loss of trees in the city, and recalled that IU-Greens, through its spokesman, Pedro Sosa, has also denounced the deaths of those planted on Rafael Maroto .

During the mandate of the PP in Lorca, more than half thousand trees have been felled.

Among them, Martín recalled the "savage logging" of 200 specimens of mulberry trees and orange trees, some with more than 30 years of life, due to the construction of the first section of the central ring road, which caused important neighborhood protests .

"It is the sad heritage of the Popular Party, committed to the disappearance of large trees and their replacement by shrubs that do not cover the extraordinary need for shade that has the urban area," Martín said.

"Adopt a tree"

The mayor of IU-Verdes recalled that Lorca only enjoys a third of green areas recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) in urban areas.

"Our municipality, which leads the tropospheric contamination rates in all of Spain, needs a real urban reforestation plan," said Martin, who proposed the implementation of an "adoption" tree program in collaboration with the colleges and institutes of the municipality.

"It involves children and young people in the process of planting and in the care and conservation of their environment," said the mayor.

According to Martín, Lorca's environmental policy is "absolutely inadequate" and asked the Mayor, Fulgencio Gil, to relieve the responsible councilor, Saturnina Martínez, of this responsibility, and entrusts this responsibility to another member of his team with more "initiative and desire" to "boost" that area.
