The councilor of Izquierda Unida-Verdes, Gloria Martin, has informed that representatives of the Community of Regantes Campo Alto have participated by invitation of this training to a meeting held this week in Brussels and promoted by the IU MEP, Paloma López.

Along with a score of public officials, representatives of environmental organizations and social platforms, the leaders of the community of irrigators that encompasses the high districts of Lorca, have analyzed the situation of the management of water resources in the Spanish State and have elaborated a report with recommendations and denunciations that will be transferred to the Directorate General for the Environment of the European Commission, at a key moment since the reform of the Water Framework Directive is being addressed.

The conference, which took place over two days, was also attended by Daniel Calleja, general director of the European Union's Environment.

Calleja, who explained the reform of the Directive, undertook to make a specific follow-up after hearing the demands on issues such as the erosion of the Segura river basin, or the incompatibility of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) with the Framework Directive itself.

In this regard, Martin said that the residents of the Highlands of Lorca are at risk of becoming the first climatic displaced in the Region of Murcia: people who, because of water shortages, have to flee their territories.

A water deficit that threatens lost fields and practically ghost towns.

In fact, the districts of northern Lorca "have already lost an average of 11% of their population only in the last five years," Martin recalled.

Therefore, neighbors and experts, demand a change in the laws that protect people and contemplate the "habitat" as part of the basic rights of the person.

For the mayor of IU-Green is "urgent" the implementation of development models according to each ecosystem.

In that sense, he denounced that the City of Lorca has been "more than a year behind" in the creation of a Local Development Agency to stop the serious process of depopulation and impoverishment suffered by this natural region.

An initiative that, at the urging of IU, was unanimously approved in the Municipal Plenary of October 2016, and that the local government team of the PP "has been paralyzed".

For Martin, "the consequences of the galloping drought that we seem are already catastrophic" so that "we can not continue to trust the future of our municipality, and specifically that of its districts to rogativas to the virgin so that it rains".

For that reason he asked "to act with responsibility and intelligence to foresee the way in which the inhabitants of rural Lorca will be able to survive, after a decade, to climate change".
