IU-Green claims more municipal resources to combat absenteeism and school failure (19/01/2018)

Adoración Peñas, councilor of the Municipal Group of IU-Greens of Lorca, has described as insufficient the resources that both the Ministry of Education and the city itself destines to combat the serious problem of absenteeism and school failure in the primary and secondary classrooms.

The mayor has stated that the existing means are human, being municipal coordinator of the program, a social worker with regional subsidy, local police tutors and another social worker of municipal social services responsible for the monitoring of individual intervention programs (PII ).

In addition, the Ministry provides two itinerant social workers for all primary schools and one PTSC (Technical Teacher Community Services) for each full-time IES, except in the IES Sierra de la Almenara and Bartolomé Pérez Casas who are part time.

In this sense, Peñas believes that the number of professionals is insufficient considering the extension of the municipality of Lorca.

As is well known, the educational competences belong to the autonomous community, so that only two social workers are assigned to 32 schools for children and primary schools is more than precarious;

as well as doing the same with the PTSC in the IES, even some of them part-time.

From IU-Greens affirm that both social workers and PTSC are essential figures in the prevention of absenteeism and school failure programs, since, among other functions, they are responsible for the detection of socio-educational and family risk situations.

Peñas, highlights that the need to intensify, expand and enhance technical and human resources in this program is not only based on the large municipal area or the significant number of students in schools (especially public), but in the most that known that warn about the educational situation in the Region of Murcia.

In this regard, IU-Greens remember that Murcia students repeat more courses than the Spanish average, both in primary and secondary, as alerted by the latest report of the education system in the region, with data relating to the school year 2014-15.

Even remember from the School Council that the successive repetitions in the different stages cause that at 15 years only 55% of students study the course that corresponds to them, above the Spanish average.

The mayor regrets the tendency of recent years to degrade public education with multiple and continuing cuts that profoundly affect the quality of education and requires the councilor of education and the mayor to put the necessary and sufficient means to tackle the serious problem of absenteeism and school failure that has such devastating consequences for the future of young people.
