The renovation of Juan Carlos I Avenue in Lorca will conclude before Holy Week (23/01/2018)

The work focuses on improving the mobility of pedestrians with wider sidewalks, integrating new trees, installing more efficient lighting and eliminating architectural barriers

The modernization of Juan Carlos I avenue of Lorca, the main commercial and social artery of the city, will conclude before Holy Week so that Lorca can enjoy completely renovated and accessible infrastructures during the celebration of one of the most emblematic events of the city, Holy Week, declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest.

The Minister of Presidency and Development, Pedro Rivera, accompanied by the mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, stressed today that "the urban renewal of Juan Carlos I is an essential work for the residents of Lorca because it changes the heart of the city to do more functional, commercial, better connected and more dedicated to the welfare of the citizen ".

"We are not satisfied with repairing the damage of the earthquake, but we build a new city in Lorca, with more accessible, sustainable and effective services," said the counselor during the visit to the works of Juan Carlos I to check the progress of the work of urban renewal, which are at an execution level of 85 percent.

The regional government allocates 5 million euros to the remodeling of Juan Carlos I, whose works are executed by the City of Lorca.

The counselor said that the new avenue "will improve and make life easier for Lorca, but will also enhance the commercial nature of the avenue to improve the future of merchants and businesses in the area, thus contributing to the economic activity and the growth of the city ".

The works that are being carried out in the main artery of the city will transform the avenue and revitalize this commercial axis, with wider sidewalks to integrate urban furniture, trees, better lighting and the elimination of architectural barriers.

These changes will allow Lorca and tourists who travel to the city of Lorca to enjoy more comfortably the Biblical-Passion parades of Holy Week.

The new public lighting will integrate LED technology and devices to increase the quality of urban lighting and reduce energy consumption, with greater control and regulation in different events.

The avenue will also have two roundabouts, which will be located at the intersection with Alameda Fajardo El Bravo and Santa Clara Avenue, to make the traffic more fluid and facilitate changes in direction.

The existing urban service networks have been renewed, both in the potable water supply network, the rainwater network, sanitation, electricity, gas and telecommunications.

Containers have also been buried to improve the management and collection of urban waste.

In addition to Juan Carlos I avenue, urban regeneration works are being executed in eleven streets adjacent to the commercial axis, with an execution rate of 75 percent.

The improvement extends to the streets Serrallo, Poet Carlos Mellado, Floridablanca, José Espinosa Pomares, Plaza de Colón, the esplanade of the Station, the Alamedas de la Constitución, Menchirón, Ramón y Cajal and his journey, and the Journalist López Barnés.
