Fulgencio Gil: "the recovery of our monuments is a pride for all and promotes the project of a new and strong city that Lorca are raising together" (25/01/2018)

The Mayor emphasizes that the Europa Nostra Prize, given today by Her Majesty Queen Sofía in the city of Burgos, is an incentive to continue improving Lorca's historical heritage.

This award is added to the National Award for Conservation and Restoration.

The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, said that the recovery of Lorca's heritage that was seriously affected by the earthquakes of 2011, is a model work of which all Lorca are protagonists.

It is a true source of pride, since each monument we recover is one more step that reinforces the new Lorca of which we are already beginning to enjoy.

These statements were made on the occasion of the delivery by Her Majesty Queen Sofía of the Europa Nostra Prize for the recovery of a battery of 6 Lorca temples that were very affected by the earthquakes in 2011.

The First Edil pointed out that the new and strong Lorca that we have managed to raise together has as one of its fundamental bases the recovery and commissioning precisely of the heritage treasure that we have.

We have been able to recover historic buildings that had fallen, turning what was once ruin and rubble into monuments symbol of strength, recovery and pure Lorca pride.

In fact what we have achieved thanks to the collective effort of all citizens, will remain as an outstanding part of the history of Lorca and as an example of what we are able to do together in the face of a catastrophe.

When we work together, we are unstoppable, so we must be able to continue joining forces to promote this new Lorca, adding proposals and forgetting critics that are out of place.

We have been executing works to recover our patrimony of around 70 million euros.

The Mayor has said that the recovery of the historical heritage of Lorca, and in particular, of 6 of its most outstanding churches, is an excellent example of the fluid collaboration of public and private entities in record time in order to safeguard the heritage of all .

It is an honor that the name of Lorca sounds throughout the continent for the good work developed in the rehabilitation and enhancement of our historical heritage and more specifically our temples, in order to ensure its conservation as an artistic legacy for future generations .

This recognition is the result of the close collaboration of the Consistory, the Autonomous Community, the State, the Bishopric and the Paso Azul Foundation, together with the good work of the architect Juan de Dios De la Hoz and his team, as well as the companies that They have executed the different jobs.

Fulgencio Gil has confirmed that with this award Lorca shows the world a part of the effort that we have all made for the recovery of the city.

We Lorca can congratulate ourselves for having achieved that the recovery of our heritage damaged by earthquakes is a model to follow for other cities that suffer major catastrophes.

We are talking about a distinction that is added, for example, to the National Award for Conservation and Restoration.

The Mayor explained that the recovery of Lorca after the earthquakes of May 2011 has become the greatest challenge of reconstruction and recovery that has had to face a Spanish city in recent history.

We must keep in mind how our municipality was that damn night in May and how is Lorca today.

We have made an enormous effort that we can feel proud of, a historical epoch that has changed us all forever and whose example we have the obligation to explain and transmit to new generations.

The First Edil has stressed that Lorca was then a broken city.

Today is a new Lorca that looks with optimism and conviction to the future and in which the ambitious recovery process travels its last meters with the aim that nothing and nobody is left behind.

We have to value the excellent result that the Master Plan offers us today, which has helped us to coordinate all the interventions that have been necessary, and which still materialize today, to raise our patrimony again.

We are proud of what we have achieved, because through this process we have succeeded in making each restored monument look much better than before the earthquake.

This work does not stop here, we continue working until all our architectural treasure is in perfect condition.

The Europa Nostra award confirms that the recovery of our heritage has been exemplary.

The monumental heritage gives us urban beauty and generates tourism, as well as constituting our main heritage.

We are talking about our legacy, the dialogue we have with our history and with previous and future generations.

Lorca proudly displays its monuments and Lorca enjoy them, as do the more and more visitors who walk these streets between curiosity and surprise to notice everything achieved.

Not only has the wealth of churches, palaces and manor houses been restored, but they also look better than ever thanks to the work done by impeccable professionals who have sown their illusion in this city.

The Europa Nostra Prize, awarded to the project to recover the temples of San Patricio, San José, San Mateo, Santiago, the Convent of San Francisco and this church of Carmen is a satisfaction and a stimulus.

The recovery of Lorca after the earthquakes of May 2011 is a unique process at the international level that, due to its magnitude, its efficiency and the result it will produce when it finishes, will have gained by its own impulse a prominent place in the history of our nation.

We are talking about moving from a destroyed city to real estate, heritage and, also, at a psychic level, to a new, modern city, with better facilities and full vocation for the future.

We must remember for a moment the collapse of Torre del Espolón, the fall of the bulrush of the San Diego church, the damages in San Cristóbal, the collapse of Santiago, the cracks in the Chapel of the Rosary, San Francisco, Palace of Guevara or the War Theater.

Now let's think about its current state.

The difference is remarkable and leads us to be aware of the depth of the process developed under the Master Plan for Asset Recovery.

The works awarded by Europa Nostra correspond to the recovery of six churches;

San Patricio, Santiago, El Carmen, San Mateo, San José and San Francisco.

In all of them, the works have employed modern anti-seismic technology, at the same time that the use of reinforced concrete was disregarded, controlled demolitions were avoided and, as far as possible, constructive techniques and traditional materials were used.

The consequence has been the reopening of the urban center to neighbors and visitors in a record time, and the consequent recovery of Lorca's social life.

The jury noted that "the use and respect of traditional methods, techniques and materials, combined with the incorporation of resistant measures against future earthquakes, has resulted in an amazing quality in the restoration work, with fidelity to the architecture Not only has the renovation of these churches been achieved, but the project has had a positive influence on their surroundings and has contributed to the rapid recovery of the entire city.
