To know the history of Lorca through the memory of its most important sources, new offer of the Workshop of Time (25/01/2018)

This is a bet of the City Council to spread the history of the struggle for water in our region, including the stage of the water auction in Alporchón.

The Councilman of Tourism in the City council of Lorca, Francisco Montiel, has informed that the Municipal Consistory, through Lorca, Taller del Tiempo, starts from this Saturday a new way of knowing an important part of the history of the municipality from which both visitors and residents can participate.

This is "The ancient sources of Lorca", and we are all aware that the history of the municipality is that of the struggle for water.

Thanks to this visit, which will start with the newly restored Fuente del Oro, we will have the opportunity to learn more about the most precious element in our region.

We will know where it was collected, how it was stored and what procedure was followed for its distribution.

The Tourism Council has anticipated that it will be next Saturday, the 27th at 11:00 when the first guided tour will take place.

Its thread will be some of the sources of the city, witnessing the relationship and the evolution of this important natural resource for the territory and its inhabitants.

The meeting point will be the Visitor Center of Lorca, from where the route to the Fuente del Oro, considered the oldest in the city, will depart.

Then, crossing the river Guadalentín, we will arrive at the fountain of the Plaza de la Estrella, in the neighborhood of San Cristóbal.

Montiel Sánchez explained that the visit will continue its journey crossing the centennial Puente de Piedra, witness to the flooding of the river throughout the history of the city.

Then we will go to the center of the city, passing by the fountain of the Plaza del Ibreño, until reaching the Plaza de España, where we will remember that years ago this plaza had different water sources such as the one that currently adorns the Alameda de la Constitución.

Mandatory stop will be the Plaza del Caño, whose fountain was one of the busiest in the city because of its close location to the main square.

The tour will continue along Calle del Álamo, reaching Calle Corredera to go to the headquarters of the Community of Irrigators, where more explanations will be offered on the importance of this place and its close relationship with the water and irrigation of the Guadalentín Region .

Here we will have the privilege of entering the Alporchón, the place where the water was originally auctioned, the place where the irrigators crowded, from very early, with the sole objective of the acquisition, at the best price, of the good par excellence, water.

It was one of the most important moments for the farmers of Lorca, which was faithfully captured by the great Lorca writer José María Castillo-Navarro in his extraordinary novel "The tired sun of September."

Mention will also be made of other sources from the different squares of Lorca that, although more modern, also have a place in this visit.

The tour will be conducted by an official guide and has an estimated duration of one hour and a half.

This visit is priced at € 7 per person, being free for children under 12 years.

For visitors with Tarjeta Amigo de Lorca, the price will be € 6.

To participate, it is only necessary to book online on the website of Lorca Taller del Tiempo, or at the Tourism counters of Plaza de España, Castillo or Visitors Center of Lorca.

Two more visits have already been scheduled for this year, one on April 15 and the other on October 20.
