The Craft Center of Lorca, the first to be built in Spain, turns 30 (25/03/2018)

Sales of handicrafts increased more than 100 percent between 2015 and 2016

The Center of Handicrafts of Lorca celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.

Located between the Palacio de Guevara and the church of San Mateo, in the historic center of the Ciudad del Sol, this building marked a milestone by becoming the first Craft Center built throughout Spain.

It was conceived as an instrument for the dissemination and promotion of the Crafts of the Region of Murcia, where to maintain exhibitions of a permanent and other temporary, and at the same time a center of information to the general public and training for artisans.

During these 30 years, the center has also become a reference for the commercialization of artisan products.

In fact, the evolution of sales in the last five years has been very significant, especially between 2015 and 2016, when the sale of crafts had an increase of 102.08 percent, motivated, as stressed by the CEO of Commerce, Consumption and Administrative Simplification, Francisco Abril, "for the change in commercial hours and the inclusion of artisan food products".

On the occasion of this anniversary, the center of Lorca hosted last weekend a day of coexistence in which about 150 artisans from the region participated, which featured live artisan demonstrations.

The inauguration of the exhibition 'Figuras del grupo de Pasión de Cristo', by the company Maestros Artesanos SL, which can be visited until April 16, is made up of artisan clay figures depicting images of the Passion of Christ, on the occasion of Holy Week in Lorca.

During the celebration of the event, April showed the support from the regional government is being provided to the craft sector.

Thus, he stressed that "we want to give greater visibility to the sector and boost the sales of Murcia artisan products both in Spain and in foreign markets, for which we have launched calls for grants and training days for artisans to incorporate the design and innovation in their creations. "

He also explained that events and thematic fairs are going to be held for the first time, such as the craft beer, the first Bethlehem Hall to promote the Nativity scene in Murcia, the first days of craftsmanship for construction and decoration or the Fair of Artisanal Gastronomy to be held in October in Lo Pagán (San Pedro del Pinatar).

On the other hand, the general director of Commerce assured that one of the main bets of this year will be to renew Feramur, the Handicraft Fair of the Region of Murcia, taking advantage of the inauguration of the new Palace of Congresses and Fairs of the city of Lorca.

"We intend to turn Feramur into a national reference, multiplying the number of exhibitors and bringing to this meeting a more professional profile, which can be complemented with the opening to the general public of the fair," said Abril.
