Residents of San Pedro ask the Mayor to return their social premises and propose alternative locations for the installation of the passer-by hostel (16/04/2018)

The residents of San Pedro say we feel helpless and ignored before a government team of the Popular Party that, without consulting, has left us in the street, without our historic social premises, inaugurated in 1979.

The residents of San Pedro have announced mobilizations and have requested to meet with those responsible for the PP in the City of Lorca, to ask them to return the social premises of the neighborhood.

The neighbors insist that they do not oppose the installation of the shelter "necessary for those who do not have a house", but they assure that "the forms that the City Council has had to take away our social premises do not have a name".

In this sense, the neighbors have come to propose "alternative" locations, even in the neighborhood itself, to give a location to the hostel of passers-by.

The neighbors, represented by the members of the recently renewed board of directors of the Neighborhood Association, Miguel Ángel Amores, Juana María Sánchez and Isabel María Ruiz, have denounced that the City of Lorca has decided "unilaterally", without having the opinion of the residents of the neighborhood of San Pedro to take away their "only space of neighborhood participation, our social locale".

It is a social establishment that was inaugurated in 1979, the year in which the City Council of Lorca ceded the use of it to neighborhood neighborhood groups.

Since then, it is almost 40 years that the neighbors of this neighborhood, generation after generation have gone through their dependencies, courses, workshops, meetings, coexistence that, year after year, have made us feel this place as our own.

In addition, until just three weeks ago, the women of our neighborhood were giving dress-making classes here.

And until just two weeks ago more than thirty children received school support classes in these facilities.

The women have been moved to another location, on a rental basis for 350 euros per month, located in another neighborhood.

They were told from the government team that they were going to move them to fix the leaks they had in their premises located in San Pedro.

They were convinced that the transfer was provisional because no one at any time told them that they would not be able to return, that is why they sign the document that is attached below.

Since then, the neighbors have been trying to communicate with the government team for weeks.

On April 3, they sent a letter to inform of its constitution as a platform for residents of the neighborhood of San Pedro, and also to request an urgent meeting with the mayor accompanied by a register with 837 signatures in support of these requests.

Days later, on April 10, they returned to provide another new document, reiterating this request for a meeting with the Mayor, and contributing more than 300 new signatures.

Likewise, on April 9, they informed the Mayor that all the women, belonging to the women's association and who in turn are part of the dressmaking workshop, asked to return to their social center located on the street. Galdo No. 13, and again, they asked again to meet with the Mayor.

On April 14, residents of the neighborhood of San Pedro held an extraordinary general meeting in a social room that provided by the neighborhood association of San Lazaro neighborhood because, they say, "we are on the street and we have no more where to meet. "

There, we proceeded to the election and renewal of positions of the previous board of directors of the neighborhood association of the San Pedro neighborhood.

These neighbors say they feel ignored and powerless, "as if we were nobody," and say that the PP government team seems to have forgotten that the repeated requests for meetings "were signed by people".

In their appearance, they claim to have the feeling that "this would not have happened in another neighborhood or parish", "it seems as if they had taken advantage of a situation of power in front of a population that due to its characteristics, suffers from a situation of special vulnerability humble population, highly aged, depopulation, school absenteeism, "he says.

For all this, the neighbors have once again requested the stoppage of the works, and have a meeting with the councilor responsible for citizen participation or with the people from the government team deemed competent to resolve this situation.

They insist on wanting to be heard and received, and of course, "to recover our social premises for the neighbors, as it has always been and they are almost 40 years old".

During their appearance, the neighbors themselves also thanked the people of the San Pedro neighborhood for their commitment, solidarity and courage.

They have also thanked all those who support this request and the neighborhood feeling, including the opposition parties, PSOE, Izquierda Unida and Ciudadanos.

Similarly, they have highlighted the support shown by the federation of neighborhood associations, thank you, and the neighborhood association of San Lazaro for the help shown these days.
