Ecologists in Action report on ozone pollution during summer Lorca (27/08/2010)

Ecologists in Action wants to report the exceedance limit protection for the health of the pollutant ozone in the town of Lorca.

During the months of June July and August has been almost continuous exceedances of ozone threshold value is 120 micrograms per cubic meter for eight hours a day.

Reviewing the data validated the website of the Ministry of Agriculture and Water on air quality have produced 18 days of exceedances of the values of health protection in June, 23 exceedances in July and so far this August 15 exceedances have occurred, which represent a total should be noted that the regulation of ozone [1] provides that not to be exceeded more than 25 days per calendar year. Practically every other day this summer exceeded eight-hour limit values for health protection of the pollutant ozone.

For its part, the World Health Organization, since 2005 [2], has lowered the limit value for health protection to 100 micrograms per cubic meter for 8 hours a day (eight hour).

Well, using the WHO criteria would increase much more the days of exceedances of limit values of tropospheric ozone

These figures evidence the significant problem of tropospheric ozone pollution in the city each summer Lorca.

. The ground-level ozone (tropospheric ozone) is a secondary pollutant formed by complex reaction with sunlight (ultraviolet) that affects pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions from vehicle and industry and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by vehicles and industrial solvents.

The highest ozone levels are recorded during periods of sunny weather.

The effects of ozone on public health are varied: Irritation of the respiratory system: cough, sore throat, or chest discomfort.

Reduced lung function in the lungs.

Worsening of conditions such as asthma, emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Ozone also exacerbates and makes people more susceptible to allergic diseases

High ozone levels can affect anyone.

But there are some groups of people are particularly sensitive to ozone:

- Children who spend most time outdoors are more active and their airways are not fully developed.

- Adults who do strenuous exercise outdoors (biking, walking,)

- Healthy individuals who perform work requiring physical effort that makes them they breathe faster and deeper, increasing the amount of ozone flowing into the lungs. Finally, as we have said before people with respiratory diseases.

PM10 microparticles

A ozone pollution comes to adding microparticuilas PM10 pollution in the town of Lorca.

The daily limit value for health protection is 50 micrograms [3], which was passed one day in June, 13 days in July and five days in August (data as of August 25).

The environmental problem of exceedances of PM10 pollution particles has implications for public health to affect the respiratory system and lungs.

This particulate matter in the atmosphere of Lorca can produce respiratory disease, cardiovascular problems, asthma and aggravation of allergic conditions.

Greenpeace demands that control mechanisms and prevention of these situations that deteriorate air quality in Lorca and the environment with the assistance of the City Council and the Ministry of Agriculture and Water and control action plan on urban mobility and road traffic as well as a increased inspections and control of industrial emissions in Lorca and the quality of your municipality are en
