The City Council is promoting a European project Lorca Life + to clean heavy metal Guadalentín River (06/09/2010)

Councillor for Environment, Melchor Morales, explained that "it would invest EUR 1,808,825, of which 895,458 euro from European funds and the rest of the Directorate General of Planning, Evaluation and Environmental Control, the UPCT, DG Natural Heritage and Biodiversity and CHS. "

Councillor for the Environment of the City of Lorca, Melchor Morales, has reported it has asked the European Commission through the LIFE + 2010, to subsidize a project for environmental restoration and landscaping of the soil of the riverbed Guadalentín using the technique of phytoextraction of a stretch as it passes the core of Lorca contaminated by heavy metals.

Morales explained that the project has a duration of four years, beginning in September 2011 and ending in August 2015.

The performance cost is 1,808,825 euros, of which 895,458 euro from European funds.

Melchor Morales explained that "both the channel and the banks of the river are contaminated, and the vegetation is degraded due to old direct discharges by industries (mainly tanneries, causing pollution and excess chromium salts), farms (pig slurry causing pollution and excess copper salts) and agriculture (over-fertilization). "

For this reason, the project's main objective is to evaluate, demonstrate and disseminate a sustainable alternative for environmental remediation and landscaping of a polluted stretch of River Guadalentín after passing through the town of Lorca.

This end is achieved by using a technique called phytoextraction, through which they will plant native vegetation that contributes to the transfer of metals and excess salts from the soil to the vegetation (to be removed periodically).

In addition, this vegetation will promote the recovery of natural communities of flora and fauna, mitigating the risk of erosion.

The Councillor explained that "with the decline in metals and salts in the soil and restoration of riparian vegetation is intended to restore the ecological balance of the river system, always taking into account the role of the local population and traditional activities their integration into the landscape restoration. "

The mayor stressed that this project is coordinated by the Directorate General of Planning, Evaluation and Environmental Control, which will provide 620,463 euros, 307,160 euros of which are funded by the European Union and to participate as partners the University of Cartagena with a budget of 688,000 euros, of which 340,594 will be financed by the EU, the Directorate General of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, which participates with 152,841 euros, of which 75,664 are from the EU, the municipality of Lorca, with a budget of 246,036 euros, 121,800 euros that the EU subsidizes, and the Segura basin, which provides 101,485 euros from 50,240 euros that are part of the grant to the initiative. "

The specific objectives are to recover the contaminated soils by phytoextraction channel (which means that different accumulators are used native plants to absorb metals from soil); protect the slopes, through bioengineering techniques and landscape integration, restoring native vegetation, the use of biomass waste generated in the phytoextraction and recovery of metals extracted to be incorporated into the production process of another product (cement), while monitoring the evolution of soil properties and vegetation.

Similarly, the goal is to rehabilitate the landscape based on ecological planning and design and landscape, and to disseminate and transfer the experience and knowledge generated at the regional, national and European levels, adapted to the different parties involved.

The performance will focus on the area along the banks or the bleeders and it would be a key to the regeneration of the river environment.
