The Community finances a plan of improvements to the landscape of the Fortress of the Sun in Lorca (20/11/2010)

It is conducting a study on the most representative plants in the area

The Ministry of Public Works and Planning, through the Directorate General of Planning and Housing, funding a plan of improvements to the landscape of the Fortress of the Sun in Lorca.

This initiative is part of the policy of support the regional government developed in recent years to support, improve and conserve the landscape of the region.

La Fortaleza del Sol is the name known to the fortified area which was built in Lorca between the ninth and fifteenth centuries, and today has been declared of cultural interest.

The Director General of Planning and Housing, Antonio Navarro, said that it is "one of the most representative monuments of the region of Guadalentín, so for the regional government is important to look after their environment, to enhance the heritage of all of Murcia. "

Among the measures already carried out various works include landscaping and planting pastures, planting native species such as lavender, rosemary or Aleppo, the channeling of surface water, rainfall or irrigation, and the development of a specific signaling.

All this is done from the strictest respect for the archaeological sites and the environmental context where it develops the plan.

"This project is environmentally sustainable, consistent with the regional situation, for which assumes that we are in a semiarid, with low rainfall. Therefore, it requires a vegetation adapted to these conditions," said director general.

Workshops and studies

The improvement plan also includes conducting four training activities organized by Lorca Taller del Tiempo, under the title 'learning fun', took place between April and June, with the aim of disseminating the Mediterranean flora.

In them, the participants came to the knowledge of esparto and twisted, and learned to recognize the plants native to the Fortress of the Sun also carried out various works in ceramics.

In addition, we are currently developing a 'study botanical flora and landscape of the Fortaleza del Sol'.

This research on the most representative plants in the environment will be implemented soon in a publication illustrated with watercolors to raise awareness through knowledge and information on the cultural value of the landscape.
