The restoration of the medieval city wall will begin during the month of April (02/02/2011)

The City accelerates the process of putting in value upon completion of archaeological excavations have been financed by the CARM.

The stretch of wall on which work will begin is the Rambla.

The scheduled execution time for the implementation of the project is 9 months.

The Mayor of Lorca, Francisco Jodar Development and Local Councillor of the Municipality of Lorca, Lali Ibarra, have reported further progress in the consolidation of the medieval remains of our city.

It is on this occasion, the works of recovery and valorization of the preserved remains of the medieval walls, particularly those relating to the stretch of wall street Rambla.

The start of work, after completion of the excavation work will be during the month of April.

The project will enter into contracts in the coming weeks.

Jodar has detailed the work includes the removal of all elements and structures that will be incorporated at all or who do not have sufficient interest to be recovered.

We're talking about structures for the elements of more recent times.

Will proceed to the leveling of the land to reach ground level compatible with the adjacent levels.

This will happen mainly in the area through the doorway of the Fountain of Gold, to reach a sufficient level to a gentle slope to the area of the Source and the proposed new building.

Also made major earthworks at both ends of the performance to match the slope of the land to a circular route around the remains of the wall.

All earthworks made shall be supervised by a team of archaeologists to ensure that it is not damaged any other interest, and in any case, the remains will be found with the treatment and adequate study.

The acting in the remains of the medieval wall is seen as a minimal intervention, respectful and compatible with existing construction materials and systems, the environment in which it is framed.

Will proceed to the removal of vegetation that has grown in some parts of the canvas and tower.

Will also remove the waste materials such as mortars, bricks, boards, plaster, paint, etc., Which have no historical value and hinder the proper conservation of the elements.

Information shall be raised from present state of parts whose irreversible damage, healthy and recess to receive subsequent replenishments.

Later the cloths clean all by irrigation with lime water to penetrate and soak as much as possible within the cavities, as well as on the surface.

All operations to be performed involving a change in the existing remains regarding the underlying assumptions, are monitored and studied by a team of archaeologists, for joint decisions on the work.

Once the cleanup will proceed to repair the walls, which consist mainly in the repair of cracks through stapled with metal or fiber, so we get the structural consolidation of the joint which will subsequently act .

For the replacement parts will be used mortars rebates that can achieve similar porosities existing stones, while obtained coefficients of thermal expansion very similar, thus avoiding the problems of breaking away.

The main advantage of this solution is that the necessary replacements do not require the removal of original material, and allow the recognition of the parts added although not at first glance.

Finally we will proceed to grouting masonry with lime mortar or failing hydraulic lime mortar.

This process will prevent overflowing grout mortar on the stones.

Should be slightly below the masonry, because the small shadows maintain tactile texture and contribute to respect the image of the monument and in addition, no grouting mortar is designed to cover the stone.

The surface finish is done with textures similar to those of the original stone, and will conclude with a color treatment on time to recreate the original patina, pigment-based natural land.

Will recover the walls of the towers

In the case of the towers, no curtains, it is proposed to recover part of the mud walls that once were and now those have been lost mostly lower except in parts and foundations.

The recovery of the mud is proposed to obtain the image of the towers that once had, but not wanting to create large volumes of mud to settle is very severe in the set.

To achieve this it seeks to recover over the wall to a height of each tower, leaving much of the rebels with the image of drywall, so it will run several boxes of mud to ensure the stability of the tower at the bottom and ensure the permanence of the existing mud.

Its implementation will be using traditional techniques of mud wall.

Means mud, in general, every wall made of a lightweight mortar that has been made by Tonga, the mortar can be bare earth, lime and gravel, made continuous mass, alternating layers of paste and mortar lime, earth and brick courses, etc.

The "belt" walled reappear

The project is committed to re-grow the wall to a level that allows us to be inside, a safety railing for the passage of persons across the ramparts.

To add these portions of standard will seek to place a layer of geotextile, although hidden, could prove the involvement with the provision of small plates, which indicated the existing level of that party and the date of completion.

This type of intervention is to be used in all sections where required the sill above to visit the ramparts, clearing the way round, which may be visited at the time of preparation.

The site will regain their battlements

The Councillor for Local Development has reported that the restoration project includes the ramparts of the wall are visited throughout its length.

To achieve this objective, it must recover the parapet level in areas where it has been lost.

This recovery will take place with the same techniques to consolidate and screed that have been explained in the towers and curtain wall, with masonry walls and masonry parts clenched in areas where there are not entirely lost.

The space between the wall paintings and interior of the parapet wall will be filled and ground stone and run a pavement of colored lime mortar.

The battlements remain protected inside the enclosure with a metal rail and light looking in areas where the parapet is completely lost will be rebuilt with metal walkways as explained below.

These ramparts are divided into two levels, the Islamic parapet level, which is lower, and remain at approximately the level of the roof of the new building and access to the interior of the tower 5 on the top, and another the parapet Christian higher, to be accessed from the deck via stairs.

Two concrete walls strengthen the wall

Will build two different canvases of concrete walls, this measure discussed.

One of them is proposed to replace the walls that now exist containing the land with the Wells Street, of course, only in the event that archaeological tastings will be performed at the feet of these walls do not result the discovery of the route of the wall, which would require intervention incorporate recovered as far as feasible.

The other section of the proposed concrete wall refers to that proposed by the pipeline found in excavations in the grounds inside the walls, leaving the light pipe between the concrete wall and the wall.

These walls contain land that will fill the gap at the moment and will sill for public use areas and subsistence will be created in this top.

Reconstruction of missing elements

It tries to reconstruct some of the elements that once formed part of the whole and have lost today.

These reconstructions, except the raising of the wall, do not arise as mimetic elements to existing elements or which might exist in the old, if not new construction raised to a completely different that leave no room for doubts about its time of completion.

For this reason, we propose, as named above, the reconstruction of the ramparts that are completely lost with cut steel walkways built with a lightweight and simple, which is accessed by stairs strategically located, performed, also Corten steel.

These sections of parapet, new construction, include a walkway that would surround the wall even above the door of the Fuente del Oro, forming thus a kind of visual threshold of the door, we do not know its original appearance.

Be built with the same material and philosophy all the elements inside the enclosure as ramps, handrails, walkways, etc.

Sought, with this an image similar to that achieved in the tower of the castle of Pombal in Portugal.

Enabling domed building and other new plant

The project proposes the authorization of the building which is now rounded.

To this end, there will be performed before its consolidation as in all structures, curtain wall and towers.

This building will close and will fit your space to use cultural tourism.

We propose a new plant building inserted in the Fuente del Oro, which is accessible from both an end and from the other, so as to create a kind of box to serve as a place semiexenta explanation of the wall and a room for exhibitions, presentations and more.

The image is intended to give this building is completely modern but may be confusion with the elements that surround it.

We propose a metal frame building facades and roof and wooden parts.

By way of example shows images of an intervention in the castle of Peñafiel in Valladolid.

The building, have been appointed as a deck of wood pieces, which serve as ground to walk the grounds at the top, and access to the ramparts recovered from the wall and the wall to enjoy the views over the river .

Previous initiatives

Francisco Jodar said "over this term the City purchased and demolished the buildings that obscured the view of the wall, where it generated an esplanade that will be put up in the coming months to improve the image of face to tourists who come Visitor Center Lorca Taller del Tiempo. "
