The Socialist Party calls for accountability in the pension debate (22/02/2011)

Rafael Ruiz, number two in the application with which the PSOE will go to the municipal elections May 22, has argued in a press conference on pensions agreement reached between the Government, unions and employers.

In his view, it is carrying out "good design" that within 25 years, "those who are now raising the country, could collect a pension of quality."

Ruiz lamented the position "alarmist" and "demagoguery" of the council of UI in Lorca, and sent a message of reassurance to the public by emphasizing that "no current pensioners will suffer."

He argued that the changes are intended to raise pensions and long-term goal is that "those retiring then have the same guarantees as we have now are pensioners."

The number two on the list of PSOE has said that government and social partners have shown "responsibility" in ensuring future pensions.

In that sense, the number two in the socialist candidate regrets the rejection of UI in an agreement "is also an important defense in the coverage of the unemployed."

The reform government agreed that pensions will nearly double by 2050 on the provision that exists according to demographic trends.

Currently, the average pension is 780 euros.

Without reform, in 2050 the average pension in Spain is estimated at 515 euros.

However, these changes will be achieved to reach the 915 euros.

In addition, the delay in the retirement age gradually be made until 2027 and there will be special conditions for trainees and women with children who have been forced to cut their journey.

Historical rise in pensions

Rafael Ruiz also explained that since 2004 the Socialist government has made "the most courageous commitment ever made in Spain" to the collective pension and minimum amounts in these seven years has embodied the highest rise in history minimum pensions.

The minimum pension, both as permanent disability retirement, with a dependent spouse, has grown by 53% since the Zapatero government.

Also, minimum pensions for widows with dependents have increased more than 81%, while the rest of widows' pensions have risen by over 46%.

All this was unthinkable in the eight-year rule of the PP when the pension increase was limited to the percentage set by the IPC.
