Defense Minister chairs an act of recognition of the military task force 'Lorca' (10/06/2011)

The Defence Minister, Carme Chacón, today attended Bétera (Valencia), headquarters of III Emergency Intervention Battalion of the EMU, an act of recognition of the work of the Tactical Group 'Lorca' After earthquakes ago a month in the town of Murcia.

In this regard, stressed that "our armed forces have again shown they are the best response to situations of extreme gravity, such as floods, snowstorms, fires or earthquakes."

Therefore, the Minister stressed that it is not surprising that four years after its inception, a total of 23 countries on four continents have been interested in the work of the EMU.

"Today, the UME is a reference in Spain and a model for nations like France, China or the United States," he added.

Also, Chacón explained that the versatility of the members of the EMU is accomplished with many hours of training and preparation that allows for better coordination with other civil protection bodies, as demonstrated in Lorca.

The defense minister recalled that a few hours after the quake came first effects of the EMU to the town of Murcia, and 10 am the next day and had managed to house 800 homeless.

In just 23 hours, 600 soldiers were deployed to distribute 5,000 rations of food and gave shelter to 1,600 people, a capacity to be increased later in the camp of victims to 4,000 seats.

Finally, the defense minister has moved to the members of the BIEM III of the Emergency Military Unit recognition and appreciation of His Majesty the King and the Prime Minister "for the magnificent work" and recalled the work carried also held in the town of Murcia by other Army units, such as Health Brigade of the Army, the Legion, the Paratrooper Brigade, Logistics Group XI Antiaircraft Artillery Regiment, the Third of Marine Lift or Airborne Sappers.
