Campaign to prevent heat stroke (30/06/2011)

This morning has started the initiative in the weekly market.

The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness among citizens, especially seniors and children, the need to stay well hydrated to avoid the dreaded hot flashes.

The councilors of Health and the Mayor of the City of Lorca, Antonio Lopez and Maria del Carmen Ruiz, presented this morning the campaign to prevent heat stroke to be developed by the city council.

This initiative includes the installation of an information booth at the entrance about the weekly market where it will proceed to the distribution of 2,000 water bottles, 1,000 cartons of juice, 500 samples of sunscreen and 5,000 brochures.

The aim of these actions is to raise public awareness of the need to stay well hydrated, so it will calculate the proportion of juice and 500 individual bottles of water within the municipal campaign of sun protection and prevention of strokes heat.

Municipal sources have stressed that published 5,000 new brochures to remind that it is very important to hydrate with water or juice, put sunscreen adapted to the area of ​​the body, age, and drink plenty of refreshing fruit.

The leaflets, which offered advice to people about how to act in the hours when temperatures reach their highest registers, will be distributed in addition to this morning at the market, senior centers, with to disseminate these recommendations as possible.

From City Hall indicated that this campaign will be aimed to raise awareness of the special way our elders from the harmful effects that have the heat and sun when the temperature extremes recorded with the arrival of summer.

The elderly, along with children and outdoor workers are the group most susceptible to suffer the dreaded heat stroke and sunburn to suffer the skin.

Remember that the heat does not affect all people equally, as there are groups more sensitive to the effects of high temperatures.

In this context we find people over 65 and children under 4, which is in addition to people with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, respiratory disease or mental workers and people exposed to the sun, and people treatment with drugs such as diuretics, beta blockers and antidepressants, and obese people.

Exposure to excessive temperatures can cause health problems such as cramps, dehydration, sunstroke, heat stroke and sunburn.

Measures to prevent heat stroke, especially in the elderly and children, indicating avoid direct sunlight in the hottest hours of the day, to help our seniors living alone, avoid sunburn by applying sunscreen, avoiding physical activity in the middle of the day, drink water frequently, cover their heads with hats or caps, to avoid hot foods and slow digestion, wearing sunglasses, not to drink, increased consumption of fruits and vegetables as well as Lightweight clothing and footwear.

Municipal sources have stressed that human exposure to high ambient temperatures may cause an alteration of our vital functions in the event that our body is not able to compensate for temperature variations.

In fact, a very high temperature causes loss of water and electrolytes that are necessary for the normal functioning of various organs.
