Meeting of the Recovery Plan for the Cultural Heritage of Lorca (07/11/2012)

It's evident the good implementation of the plan, with some actions already completed, as restorations Ram Tower and castle walls, the church of San Mateo and parts of the Archaeological Museum

Joint action by the Ministries of Education, Culture and Sports Development, the Government of the Autonomous Community of Murcia, the city of Lorca and the Diocese, as well as contributions from other entities and individuals have managed to gather more than 60% of financing planned for the five years of its development

All planned actions are part of an integrated strategy that seeks to comprehensively address the rehabilitation of the city

The provision to the European Investment Bank for the region and already included in its draft budget for 2013 will be an important impetus for the implementation of the master plan.

Government Commissioner for Lorca, along with representatives from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport, the Government of the Autonomous Community of Murcia, Lorca City Council and the Diocese of Cartagena met today at the Parador Castillo de Lorca, for study the development and implementation of the Recovery Plan Heritage.

At the meeting it has been shown that the plan is meeting its objectives, with some actions already completed, as the restorations of the walls and towers of the Castle Ram, of the Church of San Mateo or parts of the Archaeological Museum.

Other actions are already well advanced as those in the Collegiate Church of San Patricio, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria de las Huertas, Guevara Palace, the Great Wall, the Porch of San Antonio, and the churches of Santiago, Santo Domingo and San Francisco.

The works in the churches of Carmen, San Cristóbal, San Diego and at the Teatro Guerra begin shortly.

Updating the Plan data has shown that joint action by the Ministries of Education, Culture and Sports Development, the Government of the Autonomous Community of Murcia, Lorca City Council and the Diocese of Cartagena, and input received from many organizations and individuals have already managed to collect more than 60% of the funding provided in the Master Plan for the five years of its development.

The provision to the European Investment Bank for the autonomous region, and as stated in its draft budget for 2013, will be a major boost for the implementation of the master plan.

The meeting also discussed the creation of management tools to provide a comprehensive urban regeneration in the city of Lorca.

This has created the Technical Unit Recovery Lorca Cultural Heritage, formed by experts from the region and the council, which will be advised of the Institute of Cultural Heritage of Spain (IPCE).

This unit will have to expedite the processing of licenses in the historic center and address the problems of rehabilitation of urban spaces and buildings of environmental category.

It has also highlighted the need for a reform of the existing planning in the center in order to adapt to current circumstances and include in its scope the upper districts of the city, which is the route between downtown the city and the whole castle and Parador.

All these actions are part of an integrated strategy, which aims to deal comprehensively with the rehabilitation of the city, in order to revitalize its historic center, improve the living conditions of the people and by the recovery and enhancement of the heritage, enhance quality cultural tourism.
