Lorca became the capital of human rights and freedom of expression with a demonstration aimed Sakharov Prize (13/12/2012)

Lorca hosts Friday morning's broadcast day 'Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought 2012' to promote the defense of human rights, freedom of expression and recognize the work being done by various personalities who combat intolerance, fanaticism and oppression.

This seminar, organized by the European Parliament in the different EU countries, seeks to publicize the award and the work of those individuals or groups who strive to uphold human rights and fundamental freedoms.

This year, the prize went to the Iranian opposition and Jafar Panahi Nasrin Sotoudeh, who have not been picked because they are imprisoned in Iran.

The Region of Murcia joins this initiative Lorca organizing outreach events planned award in Spain and consisting, among others, in a debate on freedom of conscience and expression, at 20:00 pm at the Cultural Center Lorca.

In the debate, presented by the director of the European Parliament in Spain, Ignacio Samper, and the mayor of Lorca, Francisco Jodar, involving representatives of the European Parliament and other European institutions and regional.

Then there will be a concert by the group 'Accomplices' and a cocktail tasting products Lorca businesses affected by disasters.

Sakharov Prize

This award is named in honor after the scientist and Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov, who was the inventor of the hydrogen bomb.

His concern for the consequences of their work for the future of humanity, led him to start an awareness campaign about the dangers of nuclear arms race.

Years later created the Committee for the Defense of Human Rights and the Protection of Victims Policies, some efforts were reflected in the Nobel Peace Prize in 1975.

Since its inception in 1988, the 'Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought' was awarded to personalities like Nelson Mandela, the writer and Soviet dissident Anatoly Marchenko, the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo, the writer Salima Ghezali, the United Nations organization, Ladies in White and Reporters Without Borders, among others.
