Lorca WWTP awarded a national level (03/06/2014)

The launch of an ambitious model of global improvement in sewage treatment plant located in La Hoya has been acknowledged "Bioenergy Silver" by the Technical Association for Waste Management and Environment (ATEGRUS).

Councilman Environment of the City of Lorca, Melchor Morales and the Manager of the Water Empres Lorca, Francisco Quesada, reported this morning that the municipal waters of Lorca has been awarded the "Silver Bioenergy" Award from Association of ATEGRUS (Technical Association for Waste Management and Environment), for actions carried out in the Wastewater Treatment Plant located in the hamlet of La Hoya to improve the energy produced in cogeneration.

Morales explained that these activities have been possible thanks to the collaboration that have been keeping closely with the Bank of Sanitation of the Region of Murcia (Esamur).

It is noted that ATEGRUS is the only Spanish association that covers all systems of waste management, urban sanitation and environment, and to bring together municipalities, companies and technicians of the sector in order to share their experiences and exchange of valuation criteria biomass and other energy sources in the Spanish municipalities.

Morales Cabrera said "we are talking about enhancing the respect for the environment by reducing CO2 emissions, spending much less electricity and generating clean energy. All in a facility that also works in precisely the reuse, treatment and use of water much of our municipality. This award is to highlight the commitment of the City Council to contribute to sustainability is getting results. Indeed, today, Lorca can be proud of the effort we have been completed , a circumstance that should encourage us to continue in this direction, setting new challenges and continuing a path whose benefits they will enjoy their own citizens. "

The Councillor for Environment said that thanks to the actions and improvements to the WWTP has gotten better utilization of biogas, while it has increased power generation from biogas by 163% to 1 14 Gw / h in recent years.

This energy production represents an environmental improvement as it avoids issuing 282,720 kg of CO2.

Retrieving 3 million cubic meters of water each year

The mayor of the Environment has indicated that currently the treatment plant Lorca is more than 3 million cubic meters of water per year, as byproducts of the treatment process, produces 400,000 m3 of biogas per year, which may mean in terms of Energy 0.6 GWh / year (gigawatt hours / year), of which 90% can be recovered for the production of electric and heat energy in similar proportions.

Thanks to these modern improvement measures for sustainability and respect for nature, the EDAR de la Hoya-Lorca saves more than 282,700 kg of CO2 per year.

In an attempt to improve the system of production of renewable energy in existing WWTP La Hoya, begin to make improvements to battery installation.

With all these improvements better control digester and rapid detection of any abnormality is achieved.

Simultaneously a research project developed in I + D + i, for which it has the support of the Technology Center for Energy and Environment, including the Network of Technology Centres in the Region of Murcia (CETENMA) .

It should detail the improvements that have been focused on increasing the production of biogas, therefore, will allow the facility to benefit from increased production of kw / h, with a consequent decrease in purchasing kw / h of network and reducing CO2 emissions to the atmosphere.

Overall the improvements that have been made at this facility are as follows:

Building By-pass pipe allowing gas to conduct periodic inspections Remove flame arrestor at the top of the digester.

Demolition of the floor of the chest of the dome and removing the telescopic valve.

This display greater existing pipes and valves inside, and a considerable reduction in the difficulty in the work operation is achieved.

Emptying and cleaning of the digester.

The aim was to restore volume in the digester, removing inert materials, during this operation the existence of many leak was evident in the dome.

Rehabilitation within the digester to prevent leakage spaces with styrofoam noodles, sealing and placing a sheet of PVC were filled.

Filling the digester and commissioning.

Optimization in the automation and control.

Installation of 11 temperature sensors for greater state control and detect from inside the control room of stirring any problems inside the digester.

Installing a pressure in the discharge pipe of mud pumps digested and another at the top of the digester to the gas outlet.

In this way we avoid the jams waste pipe can cause problems in the dome of the digester.

Installation of pressure at different points in the gas line: for pressure control.

Installation of two grinding sludge to prevent ingress of solids in the digester can atrancar stirring systems and pipes.

Integration of the above in the control system of the plant.

Ballasting the digester by placing ballast element that may prevent the lifting of the dome by internal pressures.
