The church of Santiago gets the image of its owner and patron saint of Spain (25/07/2014)

The return of the size by the Valencian sculptor José Gerique, is the first of several events, culminating last summer with the reopening of the church after the restoration works have been carried out to recover the debris in became the earthquakes of 2011.

Councillors of Tourism and Culture of the City of Lorca, Francisco Montiel and Sandra Martinez, attended the return of the image of Saint James (the patron saint of Spain) to the homonymous parish, once restored.

This event takes place precisely in the day today, coinciding with the feast of the holder of the parish, with a very deep meaning throughout Europe, so its development involved the Camino de Santiago and because this feast celebrates the arrival of the apostle to Spain to preach the Gospel, according to tradition, made his entrance to the Peninsula in the land of the Region of Murcia

We note that, as happened with other images that housed the Temple, not the likes of Santiago was completely destroyed during the earthquake and was badly damaged but has now been recovered and reinstalled in place.

This is an image of the twentieth century, carved by Joseph Gerique polychrome wooden figure representing James the Greater, son of Zebedee and brother of John the Evangelist.

The sculpture presents the Holy, dressed as a pilgrim with a coat brown head on a cloud and looking skyward.

Shows the common symbols that identify you, such as cane, and shell scrip and is accompanied by four angels, three of them holding a garland of flowers and playing with hat Apostle and the fourth holding an open book.

The image has been restored in the workshops of the company Lorca Lorquimur, the same contractor works in the Temple, who has paid the cost of a complex intervention in the image, since the fall of the dome broke off into eight pieces , breaking the wings of angels, the Holy hands, part of the base and one of the figures to the right of the sculpture.

Furthermore, he experienced an overall desizing opening large cracks and breakage of multiple fragments, as well as scratches and abrasions generalized pictorial film.

For this complex recovery has proceeded first to photographically document the sculpture and make over her multitude of analysis of their condition, paint layers, of the wood, wood decay, rot, etc ... then strengthening structure inside, joining the pieces fragmented by dovetails, sealing cracks, consolidating strata with nonadherence, reintegration of the eroded surface of ponds and chromatic reintegration final protection.

The arrival of the Holy Church to its holder, means for the diocese and the parish of Santiago, a step in the recovery of the Churches of Lorca affected by earthquakes and, thanks to the collaboration of the Spanish Episcopal Conference and the Dioceses as well as various entities and individuals, is in the last step to full completion, once the dome, walls and arches of the transept, covered, tower and all the interior of the Temple.

The parish will be reopened after the summer.

The return of the likes of Santiago is an important day for the parishioners and the entire city, it marks the beginning of the culminating stage for the recovery of the Temple and the usual parish life, both interrupted by the terrible events that occurred three years ago.

This the first of several events, culminating last summer, with the opening of new worship of the Church of Santiago, after the restoration works have been carried out throughout the building and have been recovered from the rubble which became after the earthquakes of 2011.

Operators currently doing work both outside of the walls and roofs and retablos cleaning, painting, flooring, etc ... on the inside, with the goal of completing the decoration tasks in the building, and once were completed a few months ago the consolidation of its structure.
