The UN highlights the example of Lorca as a working model of Smart City (07/01/2015)

Francisco Jodar reiterate the need to establish a new legal framework at the national level that can be applied to similar to that of Lorca, which avoids the disadvantages of bureaucracy too slow, outdated cases.

The Mayor of Lorca, Francisco Jodar, will present the example of recovery and rebuilding our city after the earthquake of 2011 in the International Forum on Smart Cities that will develop in Santander on 21 January.

This is the most outstanding event in the panorama of resilience and determination of sustainability criteria for the design of so-called Smart Cities, with the sponsorship of the United Nations.

We are talking about a meeting that focuses the interest of the scientific community worldwide, with a reputed expert committee advisors personalities like Carlos Moreno (Scientific Advisor to the President of COFELY INEO, GDFSUEZ group), Gilles Berhaut (President Club France Sustainable Development Committee 21) and Alain Costes (Member of the Academy of Tecnologíasy Chairman of the Scientific Council of the InnaBioSanté Foundation).

The example of overcoming constitutes Lorca as a city that has responded effectively to the challenge of rebuilding after a major disaster, as was the case with the earthquakes of 2011, has been selected to present the main lessons and conclusions which can help provide solutions to other cities that may be affected by disasters as happened in this town.

In fact Lorca example is being highlighted by international institutions as a role model.

So much so that Lorca has been distinguished as the most recent examples, with Damir Cémerin award from the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the UN, Margareta Wahlström, within the framework of the V Meeting of the European Forum for Risk Reduction Disaster for the answer to care for older people after the earthquake, and the Office of the United Nations Reducing Disaster Risk stressed Lorca as a model of resilience, being included in the cast of resilient cities.

The Mayor has indicated that the experience of the emergency management of earthquakes has been instrumental in updating emergency plans homes and social centers for the elderly, as well as establishing new training plans tailored to the higher in self-protection measures and first aid.

Francisco Jódar anticipated that during the presentation make a tour on the impact of earthquakes and their consequences in the short and long term, but we will special emphasis on the decisions and actions successfully developed which allowed to act diligently in few problems generated earthquakes.

Similarly, and based on the conclusions drawn in the First Day Lorca Resilient held last November, will discuss lessons learned about conflict resolution and state emergency response to a natural disaster.

To do this we draw a global vision that allows us to explore lessons learned from different areas: professional, emergency, educational, political, voluntary, police, military, etc.

Finally, we will enter the process of reconstruction and regeneration of the town of Lorca, which analyze an example of a smart city foundation starring future urban quality resources for residents to impact on a better quality of life in socially and environmentally.
