A natural solution to a human problem.
A pioneering project will decontaminate the river bed of the Guadalentín Lorca by planting certain plant varieties.
Plants extract pollutants from heavy industries and agriculture and deposited over the years in the underground, while achieving clear land, establish and protect the slopes and recover the flora and fauna of the area.
The president of the Segura basin (CHS), Miguel Ángel Ródenas, and the Director General of Environment of the Community of Murcia, Encarnación Molina, have signed this week an agreement that seals the participation of CHS in the Life + Riverphy project.
This initiative is led by the Government of the Region of Murcia and also the basin organization, also involved the Polytechnic University of Cartagena and the city of Lorca.
The project has already begun and will run until 2017, with a budget of 1.7 million euros, financed by the European Union.
Another important aspect of the initiative is to take into account the local population and its traditional activities, in order to involve local residents in the continuity of long-term project.
