The work, which began weeks ago, have an investment of over 700,000 euros by the CARM.

Already rebuilt the belfry of the main façade, whose fall is one of the most media images of the earthquake of 2011

The Councillor for Culture of the City of Lorca, Sandra Martinez, this morning visited the rehabilitation works for the church of San Diego, which was severely damaged as a result of earthquakes in our city in May 2011. Martinez Navarro recalled that was precisely the fall of the steeple of this church one of the images caused greater impact at the media since collapsed as a television camera was performing a live link nationwide.

Thanks to the work being undertaken a few weeks ago, this belfry has been rebuilt with modern materials and new structures, specially prepared to withstand earthquakes, and has also made withdrawals of scaffold structures that were on the outside the temple.

Sandra Martinez explained that the recovery of San Diego is part of the historical heritage elements included in the master plan for Lorca heritage damaged by earthquakes.

In the course of works have appeared numerous damage, so it is working with a project open to modification.

One of the main problems has been found to undertake this action has been the strong displacement suffered by the main facade, which compared to the temple body almost 15 inches off, something that has already been corrected getting together with other actions fully consolidate the building.

The mayor of Culture has stated that they have also found serious damage to the pillars that support the nave, which even led to fears over the stability of the building.

Similarly found a series of paintings in the temple, some of the seventeenth century belonging to the then Church of Our Lady of the Forsaken, on which the current building was constructed.

Therefore under investigation since the commission of the Master Plan for deciding on the suitability of its conservation.

The outstanding performance of the remaining term for bringing this temple corresponds to the removal of the concrete layer dome hindering their resilience to earthquakes.

We are talking about easing the burdens of the nave in more than 80 tons.

Francisco Marín, technical manager of this work has indicated that all arches and cracks are already sutured and fixed.

Found deformations in the vault outside the earthquake.

We were very concerned at first the stability of the building, so we proceeded to strengthen its scaffolding.

The displacement of the facade created a situation of instability that was corrected with sheets of 4 meters located 20 degrees inclination to bulb mode.

It was found that the earthquake had fallen to 40% of the resistant section of the pilasters, which alerted us and has also been corrected.
