The Minister of Development, Public Works and Planning, Francisco Barnabas, accompanied by the rector of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), Jose Antonio Franco, and the mayor of Lorca, Francisco Jodar, today opened the conference aims to provide meet seismic microzonation study conducted by seven teams working UPCT commissioned by the Ministry.

The study by the UPCT is intended to clarify the response of land and building structures affected in each of the aspects involved in this kind of phenomena: geological, geotectonic, geotechnical and structural, all included in the so-called Earthquake Engineering.
Seismic microzonation is the division of an urban microzones geographical territory where different behaviors in an earthquake of great magnitude are forecast.
These maps are an essential element seismic risk reduction, whose ultimate goal is to determine for each type of soil response to seismic excitation surface.
Based on these results we can estimate the distribution of seismic intensities in future earthquakes for effective risk management, and you can define the seismic conditions required for territorial and urban development in the area.
