The European Parliament is hosting an exhibition on the reconstruction of Lorca after the earthquakes and cultural richness (12/05/2015)

The exhibition, sponsored by the Office of the Vice President of the European Parliament, Ramon Luis Valcarcel, consists of 10 information panels that provide updates on the situation of the town, 2 mantles of the White and Blue steps as an example of the artistic wealth of the processions Easter, as well as two models with replicas of materials Jewry and 3 thematic audiovisual on the Jewish quarter, the embroidery technique and advances in the reconstruction process

The European Commissioner for Regional Policy, Corina Cretu, President of the European Committee of the Regions, Markku Markkula, and the Mayor of Lorca, Francisco Jodar, inaugurated this afternoon at the headquarters of the European Parliament in Brussels a special exhibition retrospective process reconstruction of the city after the earthquake in May 2011 caused the largest urban devastation in Spain since the war civil.La exhibition, called "Reconstruction of Lorcathrough the European Regional Development Fund" (The reconstruction of Lorca through the European Regional Development Fund) , it is promoted by the Office of the Vice President of the European Parliament, Ramon Luis Valcarcel, and has the support of the City of Lorca.

The exhibition, which this afternoon is open to the public, can be seen until May 13 morning in the department with 3G ASP cafeteria.

From Lorca we contemplate this historic opportunity asa event that the municipality wants to use to publicize their chances of development and progress thanks to powerful investments that have been made by the European Union have achieved during these four years.

It is recalled that this city was based on a particularly difficult situation, after suffering the biggest earthquake in decades, claiming the lives of nine people, leaving more than 70,000 people out of their homes and ruining much of its monumental and historical heritage, key the local tourism sector.

Being clear from the start that there are still things to be done, we have to emphasize that the situation that exists today in Lorca has improved, mainly by two factors: the personal effort of each and every one of its citizens to get ahead and investments that have been made by the different public administrations so that families in this town could recover what earthquakes destroyed and thus normalize their lives.

It is to emphasize the extraordinary role that has developed from the European Union to contribute to the reconstruction of Lorca.

The figures leave no doubt: 218 million euros, divided into 3 large blocks of financial and economic contribution:

1) European Solidarity Fund: the November 17, 2011, the European Commissioner for Regional Policy, Johannes Hahn, made public approval eurosdestinados DE21 million to finance emergency measures such as relief operations, cleaning zones affected and repairing basic infrastructure.

2) European Regional Development Fund (ERDF): EUR 12 million that are being used:

2-3) Extension of municipal nursery business, to stimulate the implementation of new initiatives by entrepreneurs Lorca.

3) loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia for the amount of 185 million euros: initialed on June 28, 2012 between lavicepresidenta EIB, Magdalena Alvarez, and the then Prime Minister regional, Ramon Luis Valcarcel, current Vice President of the European Parliament.

This amount is being used for the overall improvement of dozens of neighborhoods, streets, adaptation of new roads and repair highways damaged by earthquakes.

Special mention in this regard is the decisive contribution that this funding is being made for the recovery of the architectural heritage of the city, consisting of medieval buildings (Castle, Jewish, synagogue ...), civil Baroque jewel of the Mediterranean Palace (Guevara) and historical churches built between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries, which suffered serious damage from these earthquakes.
