IU-Greens related poverty in Lorca with a wrong approach to economic and social policies (17/09/2015)

Dori Peñas, councilor of the Municipal Group of IU-Greens, expressed the indignation of his group to release data Ais Study Group in pointing to Lorca as the third poorest city of over 50,000 inhabitants of the country, with more situation of need, with a poverty rate of 38.3%, far from the 22.2% of the national average.

Peñas recalled that this is not the first report that demonstrates the poverty that exists in the region of Murcia, specifically in Lorca, and other organizations such as Caritas, UNICEF and Save the Children have done so previously , claiming, inter alia alarming rates of child poverty and outrageous above countries like Romania.

From IU-Greens claim that in the particular case of Lorca have been several factors that have influenced this situation.

First, note that the development model of Lorca that has been refined over the past two decades, based on the progressive closure of the industry, the commitment to the brick, and the excessive expansion of irrigated area semiarid like ours has been a complete failure.

On the other hand, the municipal social activities for decades, are basically welfare, without affecting the preventive functions, rehabilitation and community development partner, essential for the social development of the municipalities involved and to reduce social exclusion.

On the other hand, it stressed that Peñas Sun City lacks good performances for wealth creation and employment promotion, calling precarious and few initiatives developed by the different employment council has the city of Lorca in the last years, especially since the economic crisis began.

The mayor also wanted to remember that regional social policies have had enough time Valcárcel responsibility the position of Lorca and the rest of the region in this study measuring poverty situations, because for years not been given the importance with actual social policies, subject to continued cuts in successive regional budgets, as well as the various programs and services to the most vulnerable people, many of them disappearing.

To Peñas, it is inconceivable and unacceptable question, since the answer has been offered by the regional and local administration to situations of increasing poverty among the population as a result of the crisis has been to eliminate and reduce scarce social resources without also raising new springs to the fight against poverty and exclusion, by advocating her Murcia, Lorca and leaving at special defenseless groups as vulnerable and in need of attention public authorities such as the elderly, children or dependents.

In this sense, IU-Green requires the mayor a radical shift in the approach to social policy in Lorca, since the situation in the municipality is not the result of earthquakes, but a wrong approach based solely on welfare.
