Discover new paintings of the sixteenth century in the collegiate church of San Patricio de Lorca (27/11/2015)

Restoration work carried out in the former collegiate of San Patricio de Lorca, included in the Master Plan for the Recovery of Cultural Heritage of Lorca, I launched after the earthquake of 2011 by the Community, the Central Government and the City, they have allowed find some paintings of the sixteenth century hitherto unknown and were hidden in various parts of the church.

The Minister of Culture and Spokesperson, Noelia Arroyo, had on Friday the opportunity to see virtually the only of the Renaissance period known so far in Lorca, during a visit in which he was accompanied by the mayor of the paintings discovered town, Francisco Jodar, and the architect responsible for the restoration of the temple, Juan de Dios de la Hoz.

Noelia Arroyo explained that this new finding "highlights the wealth and cultural value of the Church of St. Patrick, one of the many temples that Lorca, thanks to intense joint work from the various administrations and the efforts of citizens, are being recovered and completely restored so that they can again be admired and enjoyed by the citizens. "

The restoration of the church of San Patricio de Lorca has a total budget of 4.37 million euros, of which the Community will provide more than 50 percent, almost 2.5 million.

Also, due in part to the paintings that have been finding, along with other causes, there is provided an expansion of nearly 400,000 euros that will also provide the Community.

In this sense, Noelia Arroyo reiterated "the commitment of regional government with Lorca, Lorca and the recovery of all their cultural heritage" and recalled that "already executed more than 80 percent of the works included in the Plan Director, being an example of efficiency and good practice across Europe. "

The finding has been made possible by the parietal tastings in San Patricio during its restoration.

Specifically, there have been paintings, in addition to those already discovered, on the cover of access to the sacristy, the Chapel of the Rosary Chapel of the Assumption, Chapel of the Shrine and Virgen del Alcazar, the chapel of the Custody, of Saint Angelo and San Ildefonso.

The paintings are appearing in most cases quality, and for the first historical period of the collegiate, developed during the Renaissance, according to details the architect Juan de Dios de la Hoz in its report also details that have been made measurements on the remains found, with more than 1,300 square meters result.

It is geometric decorations and figurative motifs (iconography of various saints) or vegetables varied and colorful forms, and its condition is relatively good.

It also found wall paintings of saints and different, probably after the Baroque religious orders and decorations of the Dominicans whose existence was already known.

The report also notes that the architect covers the sacristy and access to the chapel possess elaborate decorations of figures in high relief with Renaissance flesh tones.

St. Patrick's paintings are particularly relevant for the date on which they were made.

Until now, the mural in Lorca seemed to be confined to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, as the examples known as the only example of late sixteenth century was the hermitage of San Roque and San Sebastián.

The tastings suggest the archivist Manuel Muñoz Clares that is decorative paints with a clear aesthetic frame in the Renaissance.

Their characteristics, defining the contours lines, a short range (red and ocher) colors and a medium quality, indicate that its implementation was entrusted to painters of the town in the second half of the sixteenth century.

It also indicates the expert who the author might be the painter Pedro Marquez, brother of the canon of the collegiate Lorca, Alonso Márquez.
