Lorca and Murcia selected in the Urban Initiative program (11/06/2008)

Lorca and Murcia are the two cities in the region of Murcia selected in the 2007-2013 Urban Initiative program to promote sustainable urban development projects.

Between the two projects will be 15,043,911 euros from the European Development Fund (ERDF), European Union, and will be financed by various local governments.

The final investment amount to 21,491,301 euros.

Around 15,000 people will benefit from the performances in the different projects.

The aids are part of the Urban Initiative which aims to economic regeneration, environmental and social regeneration of urban areas to promote sustainable local development.

The program takes into account the special importance of cities as they are the engine of development of countries and primarily responsible for innovation, creating jobs and attracting capital.

The call for aid was intended for municipalities with a resident population of over 50,000 inhabitants and provincial capitals that would not reach that number of people.

In total, 4 applications were received from different cities of Murcia, of which have been accepted these two projects.

Government's commitment to the continuity of URBAN

During the programming periods of EU Funds 1994-1999 and 2000-2006, the European Commission supported 41 Spanish cities through the Urban Programme.

At such times, Spain was 388.65 million euros for projects with a total investment of 566.29 million euros.

In the new period 2007-2013, to pick up and continue the spirit and the successful experience of the past URBAN Initiative, the Government has seen fit, at its option, continue to develop this type of integrated intervention in the line of "Local and Urban Regional Operational Programmes 2007-2013 financed by the European Regional Development Fund.

The projects were characterized by a holistic approach, regarding the development of a multidisciplinary set of actions (environmental, social, urban, economic, tourist, cultural, heritage, new technologies, information society, etc..) To address problems a selected urban area within the municipality and with a clear social and economic disadvantage compared to all the same.

More than 100 nominations in Spain

The number of nominations received from the various municipalities in Spain has been 102 proposals and the number of projects and cities finally selected was 43.

The allocation of ERDF support for this initiative was previously regionalized Urbana between the Autonomous Communities, a number indicative of potential target cities by region.

For the evaluation of the projects has been a joint committee chaired assessment by the Ministry of Economy and Finance and they have also formed part of the Ministry of Public Administration, the Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs and the Ministry of Housing .
