Lorca will take center disinfection of transport vehicles "art of southern Spain" (28/07/2009)

The Minister of Agriculture and Water, Antonio Cerdá, and the mayor of Lorca, Francisco Jodar, today signed an agreement for the construction of a cleaning and disinfection of vehicles transporting livestock to be located at the Place of Casa La Higuerita Diputación de Barranco Hondo, and occupy an area of 8,500 square meters.

The owner of Agriculture and Water said that "going to be the most modern of all of southern Spain, with an investment of 270,000 euros, and will include a computerized system of recording the movements of animals."

Cerda said Lorca and the High Guadalentín is won logistics zone "in which it accounts for 40 percent of the regional livestock industry.

It also has two centers for cleaning and disinfection to maintain "the health status as acceptable 'for a livestock and prevent" a possible spread of diseases. "

The Minister stressed the need for these centers "as a precautionary measure" and explained that the development of livestock and the emergence of new techniques and national and EU regulations mandatory "make these centers will be retrofitted or implement new ones" .

In the Region of Murcia there are 40 centers disinfection of vehicles used to transport livestock by road, of which six are public utilities and other private use.

In 2008 there were a total of 14,982 movements and 83,263 animals in the slaughter, with a volume of more than 36 million animals in both cases.

Cerda said that for more than three years "we have been promoting the improvement and adaptation of existing ones, and announced that new centers will be expanded utilities, distributed at various strategic points in the Region, and in Puerto Lumbreras.

Responsible for Agriculture and Water said that "once we have established our base animal, you need more biosafety mechanisms to improve our profitability and competitiveness."

The counselor also noted that the Region of Murcia "has one of the healthiest herds of Spain", which follows from the results obtained in recent years with the implementation of regional warning network, with which it has reduced rates or eliminated diseases such as brucellosis, tuberculosis, swine fever, foot and mouth disease, bluetongue and Aujeszky disease.

Finally, Cerda said that livestock is one of the primary sectors and major economic and social importance in the agricultural region as a whole, which contributes 25 percent of the final agricultural product.

He added that "in order to remain competitive, we have to bring in all actions for the eradication and prevention of animal diseases and prevent its spread if a health warning," he said.
