Next week we will run the first "ciclocalle" of the town, join the bike path of the turret to the center of the city (09/10/2009)

Lorca City Council launches a new experience designed to encourage the use of bicycles as alternative means of transport to the car.

Within the framework of action arising from the implementation of Agenda 21 in Lorca and the commitments made upon accession of Lorca to the Network of Cities for the bike, starts in the town's first experience ciclocalle, which aims to unite the current bike lane Torrecilla, which runs along the road Lorca-Puerto Lumbreras, with the center of the city through Granada Road, providing safer alternatives to this mode of transport.

The works will begin next week, have run a budget € 10,588.

The project involves the installation of a vertical and horizontal signs warning of the new condition of the road: road marking consists of alternating core visible directional arrowheads icons will be supported vertically bicycles and other signals that identify the track and ciclocalle.

In this way will be released to drivers of motor vehicles the priority for cyclists and in those sections where the ciclocalle runs through pedestrian traffic areas will be remembered the cyclist pedestrian priority.

As a general rule, there will be between each arrow and icon a distance of 10/15 meters, although it is equidistant adapt to the circumstances of the existing signage.

The proposed circuit has a length of 1,800 meters and passes through different urban sections (roads, sidewalks, pedestrian tunnels, etc..) From the rotunda of the San Antonio district, using the underpass, up the rotunda of Alfonso X in the beginning of the street Pérez Casas.

According to the Councillor for Sustainable Development, Francisco Garcia has said that "as a concept ciclocalles are a step in the promotion of activities to promote urban mobility in our cities and try to normalize the movement of road bikes where space is shared with other vehicles or pedestrians through the adoption of measures to warn that sharing "

The idea of "ciclocalle" has been driven by applying the successful experiences of other cities to facilitate the mobility cyclist, both on the outside, as is the case in Belgium, and Spain, for example in Valencia.

This is a concept that refers to a road that supports traffic but, with appropriate signage, prioritizes the movement of the bike compared to other vehicles.

This new regulation, which is embodied with vertical and horizontal signaling specifically aims to increase road safety of the rider to continuously inform the driver of the vehicle

motor that is traveling along a road with priority for the bike.

The ultimate goal is to increase the number of bicycle users in the city and promote the use of this mode of transport for safe routes, and that while bicycles can travel on any street, in the "ciclocalles" enjoy greater protection before the car thanks to that specific signaling proposing the project.

Garcia stressed that "our priority is to connect the proposed sections in the latest actions to give continuity to the itineraries designed for bicycle and served by cycle lanes, so that, pending completion of the network of cycle paths, those routes which are constructed and the future stretches designed to connect through these new ways of sharing preference.

So is this the first action is undertaken, and that it gives continuity to a major urban area that is already built the first bike path in the city. "

The government team is aware that it is increasingly common to use the bicycle to travel on urban roads, so it is also becoming more necessary to take measures that make it possible to improve the quality of life for citizens by encouraging the use of cycling as alternative transport and providing the city with new elements and sufficient means to facilitate, in a safe, urban mobility through these vehicles.

The commitments to reduce CO2 emissions to air and road traffic problems of a city like Lorca by design is not ready to absorb the high motor vehicle traffic are matters that are intended to temper by promoting the use of cycling and public transport.

Among the undertakings it gave the town of Lorca to join the Network of Cities for the bike was to develop strategies to make cycling attractive and safe, and designing urban spaces for most trips can be performed by the means of transport, and also improve and increase the network of routes and enhance avenues of collaboration with organizations that promote greater use of bicycles.

This initiative seeks to fulfill these commitments.
