Lorca City Council prepares a draft recovery of the first section of the Via Augusta (15/10/2009)

The feasibility study and needs ecotourism itinerary Adequacy "Via Augusta" in Lorca has been funded by a grant from the Ministry of Tourism of the Autonomous Community, destination tourism infrastructure to develop the network of routes and trails ecotourism in the region of Murcia.

This project aims to promote the social, economic cultural and natural corridor connecting Lorca Velez Rubio, an emerging engine of the local economy through the development of initiatives related to rural tourism and ecotourism.

The study, developed and implemented has been taken as reference at all times the work of the Directorate General of Tourism Infrastructure, and the criteria and guidelines established for the implementation of the Ecotourism Trail Network in the Region of Murcia, and has also included the development of 2,000 leaflets in three languages (Spanish, English and French) with the history and description of the route as well as recommendations and other relevant information.

In the study, technicians recommend addressing its implementation in phases, due to the length of this route, the first phase of the stretch-Lorca Swamp Bridge.

This first phase will be followed by actions necessary for the implementation of the complete itinerary.

The feasibility study of the Via Augusta has allowed an on-ground environmental assets and liabilities and interest related to the itinerary and assess the state found, propose actions that enable implementation of the route, establishing a route accessible to the general population that allows the enjoyment of the historic, natural and associated cultural tour and recommendations to facilitate the future management of the itinerary.

In addition, this action will further the development of the route as a form of sustainable tourism that respects the environment.

The design of phase I of the Route of the Via Augusta Ecotourism would include the drafting of an executive, the completion of refurbishment works of that section and the complete signal path.

The refurbishment works include the definition and adequacy of design (strong improvement of the course and actions of security and cleaning) and layout of seating areas.

Most travel will be practicable on foot or by bicycle, but there are specific sections in which is made specifically advised one way or another.

"With the completion of this study are beginning to realize the actions to create the itinerary of the Via Augusta Ecotourism, cultural benefits which will allow to recover part of local history is largely unknown today, and develop initiatives related to rural tourism and ecotourism ", stressed Francisco Montiel.

The layout of this route coincides largely with that of two of the Ecotourism Trail (No. 26 "Lorca" Caravaca "and number 19 called" Dam Bridge-Xiquena ") proposed by the regional administration to form the Green Grid Murcia Region

Via Augusta is one of the most important roads of the Roman period in the Mediterranean.

This route ran from north to south the peninsula with a total length of about 1,500 km and was part of a complex network of roads.

In the town, consists of a tour of nearly 45 km long walk practicable and / or bike in almost all the way except for a small section that is recommended only on foot.

Connecting the town of Lorca with other routes such as the Municipality Cejo Road Lover's, Route Cambrón and GR that crosses the municipality.

Presents a wide diversity of landscapes, covering the most unique places in the municipality of Lorca: riverbeds, mountain formations and large agricultural and livestock.

Along this route there are numerous traces of different civilizations that have inhabited the town of Lorca over time as the castles of Lorca, Tirieza, Bridges and Xiquena the Rye Andalusian Mosque, the Roman town of Limerick , milestones, etc ...., which gives an idea of the importance and use of this overview of the different cultures that have been present in this territory.
