The dispute Mendez Kevin lorquino Iceland European Paralympic Swimming (19/10/2009)

(Madrid, October 16, 2009) .- The athlete Kevin Mendez lorquino participate between 18 and 24 October at the European Championships Long Swimming Pool, to be held in Reykjavik (Iceland).

The Spanish delegation comprise 42 athletes: 22 physically handicapped, ten blind or visually impaired, six with cerebral palsy and four mentally disabled.

Kevin Mendez (S13), which has a visual impairment, was part of the Spanish team at the Paralympic Games in Beijing, where he was eighth in 400 meters freestyle.

Mendez was released in the second World Junior Championships held in Colorado Springs (USA) in 2005, winning three gold and three silver.

In Paralympic swimming, participants were divided into fourteen classes, depending on the type and degree of disability.

Ten of them encompass the athletes with cerebral palsy and physical disabilities (from S1 to the most affected to the slightest S10), while three other swimmers blind group (S11) and sighted (S12 and S13).

The S14 is reserved for the intellectually disabled.

The Spanish Federation of Sports for the Physically Disabled (FEDDF) Iceland take the largest number of athletes, a total of 22: Miguel Angel Martínez Tajuelo (S3), Ricardo Ten, Chano Rodríguez, Vicente Gil, Pablo Cimadevila, Xavier Torres Miguel Luque (S5), Daniel Vidal (S6), Alejandro Sánchez (S8), Jesus Collado and Jose Antonio Marí (S9), Javier Crespo (SB9) and David Levecq and Joan Giralt (S10).

In the women will participate Lorena Homar, Marta Expósito and Julia Castelló (S6), Leyre Ortí (S8), Sarai Gascon (S9) and Esther Morales, Ana Isabel Hernandez and Rubio Yinghua (S10).

The representatives of the Spanish Sports Federation for the Blind (FEDC) will be a total blind Eduardo Cruz (S11), the severely visually impaired Enrique Floriano, Omar Font, Albert Gelis, Edgar Quiroz, Carla Casals, Marta Gómez and Alonso Amaya (S12) ; more mild visual impairment Begoña Curero (S13).

For its part, the Spanish Federation of Sports cerebral palsy (FEDPC) will have five other swimmers: Sara Carracelas (S2), Amaya Zuazua (S3), Richard Oribe and Ana Ortiz (S4), Dácil Cabrera (S7) and Jordi Gordillo (S5).

As to the Spanish Sports Federation for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (FEddi) Four athletes will compete: Ania Beltrán, Judith Garcia, Francisco Perez and Carlos Tejada (S14).

The 192 tests that were held at the European indoor 50 meters and 10 blocks located in the Laugardalur Swimming Complex in the Icelandic capital.

The previous European Championships were held in 2001 in Stockholm (Sweden) and Spain won 83 metals.
