The PSOE warning of shortages in health care to children (15/01/2010)

The Socialist Councillor Isabel Casalduero warned today of various shortcomings and deficiencies that affect child health care in the municipality, which are the responsibility of the Autonomous Community.

The mayor said at the outset that the lack of medical specialists in pediatrics is "troubling."

But he said, for example, health center-Centro Lorca has no pediatrician, and family doctors are covering the health care of children.

Despite the important work being done by general practitioners, this can lead, as they say experts consulted by the PSOE, a privatization of the specialty, increased consultation with emergency services, an increase in the number of tests complementary and, ultimately, a decline in the quality of health care for the child population.

Casalduero said the emergency services centers in San Diego and regional Hospital Rafael Méndez, pediatricians have not and that, in the case of the hospital, is the specialist in plant guard who is also responsible for assistance to cover in the ER.

This causes a timeout in this unit can survive several hours if the doctor is attending to a patient admitted or a newborn who required assistance after delivery.

Apart from this, the Socialist councilor expressed the discomfort of his party for the "serious gaps" exist in the hospital's pediatric floor.

The plant, divided in neonates, infants and schoolchildren, is the only hospital that has not been remodeled since the inauguration of the center two decades ago.

Thus, it has completely obsolete equipment and facilities, and requires the urgent renovation of utensils and medical apparatus and furniture in rooms that are "totally outdated and obsolete."

The infant room is not adequately equipped to enable mothers to breastfeed their babies.

The playroom is in a sorry state, there is a waiting room and rest for nursing mothers, or showers for those who have to stay a long time in the hospital.

In addition, the plant lacks resuscitation box / observation for newborns / infants and schoolchildren.

Also, it is necessary isolation box that truly meets the characteristics required for this type of installation.

In the school area there are six rooms, two four-bed, "more characteristic of the nineteenth century" and "unbearable" for families who are forced to crowd into them, according to the mayor.

Such is the lack of conditioning in the hospital for the pediatric population, which has even given the fact that in the middle of flu epidemic, people with mixed symptoms of this disease in the emergency waiting room for children, the they were told it was better to wait in the street.

Casalduero thanked family doctors, a few existing pediatricians and other health professionals their efforts because their attention to the children of the municipality is "similar" to those received in centers with appropriate conditions for these professionals to do with dignity and comfort their work.

No clutch, since the PSOE said that health workers and users deserve the Ministry of Health show a minimum of sensitivity to them and proceed as soon as possible to the reform of the plant Pediatric Hospital Rafael Mendez, and to solve needs and gaps that exist in this area of health care.
