Young people, between 8 and 12 years old, living in the Tindouf camps will receive a complete global medical review, a balanced diet and the opportunity to improve their Spanish while participating in awareness activities about the problems of the Saharawi people
The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, received this morning at City Hall the children participating in the program "Vacations in Peace" organized by the Association of Friends of the Saharawi People presided over by Antonio García Ros.
Specifically 7 children between 8 and 12 years old participate in the initiative that will end at the end of August.
Gil wanted to "welcome our young visitors who throughout the summer will enjoy the hospitality that characterizes Lorca and Lorca, so I want to congratulate the Association of Friends of the Saharawi People for the effort and commitment so that each year Let's prove our solidarity city status and strengthen the ties that bind us to these young people and to the Sahara, because we must remember that Lorca is twinned with Wilaya El Aaiún, but I especially want to congratulate the families that make this beautiful and generous initiative possible. that says so much of our municipality, because they are the ones who put everything on their part so that the Sahrawi children can enjoy this experience ".
Under the "Vacations in Peace" program, Saharan children will receive a global medical check-up, including vaccination, dental, eye and hearing screening of all children.
They will also be offered a balanced diet during the summer months, which will help them to face the winter with more health, a welcoming environment and receptive to different cultures, the opportunity to avoid more than 50 degrees Celsius of the camps during the months of summer and they will improve their mastery of Spanish, which is the first foreign language in the curricula of the Saharawi schools.
There will also be awareness-raising activities on the problems of the Saharawi people.
The City of Lorca and the NGO Friends of the Saharawi People signed an agreement last May for which the Town Hall provides 6,000 euros to the initiative "Vacations in Peace" to finance the transfers of young participants from North Africa to Lorca. The Lorca Consistory, to the extent of its possibilities, will continue to finance the realization of social projects to help the Third World, as it has been collaborating in previous years with the applicant organization in the projects aimed at improving the living conditions of the Saharawi people, and in particular, the Saharawi child population displaces in the refugee camps of Tindouf, in Algeria.
In addition to this initiative, Amigos del Pueblo Saharaui collaborates with the camps through the donation and shipment of clothing and footwear for refugees in Tindouf.
