This center increases its capacity to 120 places allowing to increase production to meet existing demand
The first Regional Artificial Pig Artificial Insemination Center of the Region of Murcia has expanded its facilities, with the construction of a new ship, thus increasing its capacity in 120 places for bait pigs.
This expansion will increase production to meet the existing demand and offer the service to all pig farmers who need it.
The Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Miguel Ángel del Amor, has opened this center accompanied by the Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, by the Director General of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Francisco José González Zapater and the President of the Adespolorca, Francisco Román.
Del Amor stressed that "pig production places the Region of Murcia as the second province with the highest census, currently with some 1,500 active farms and a record of 158,000 breeders", which means more than four million bait pigs annual
He also stressed that with this expansion has increased the use of these facilities by 25%.
During the ceremony, the counselor highlighted the importance of the pig sector in the regional economy, "making the Region one of the most important livestock communities in Spain."
Last year, 320,000 tons of pork were produced, with an increase of almost 40,000 tons compared to 2016.
The Ministry has collaborated financially with the contribution of € 55,000 for the creation, expansion and improvement of the facilities.
The center, facilities, belonging to the Lorca Porcine Cattle Health Defense Group, is considered the first regional level for this activity.
Currently, they have 103 high-caliber boars that inseminate approximately 28,000 sows, which means 100 percent of the census owned by their direct partners, and another 7,000 from livestock organizations.
Among the municipalities of the Region, which accumulates much of the performance of the pig sector, include Lorca and Puerto Lumbreras where about half of the regional farms of this species are located, with an approximate census of 50,000 breeders and 676,200 animal seats of bait.
