Gloria Martin asks the PP municipal government to stop doing "blind eye" to the uncontrolled accumulation of waste that produces intensive agricultural activity and requires the City to launch a local plan to fight against contamination by plastics to prevent damage to health, the economy and the Environment
The councilor of Izquierda Unida-Verdes, Gloria Martin, has lamented that the torrential rains of last Saturday have returned to produce a serious episode of contamination by waste in the environment of the Navy of Cope.
Martín showed some disturbing images in which it is observed how at the mouth of the sea of the wadis, all kinds of agricultural materials are accumulated: polyethylene trays, containers of phytosanitary substances, whole rolls of irrigation hoses, remains of crops, of plastic bottles and other garbage.
Martín recalled that last May, Izquierda Unida raised to the Municipal Plenary a motion with different proposals to minimize the impact of waste from agricultural activity in the vicinity of the Cabo Cope-Puntas de Calnegre regional park.
However, these did not go ahead because of the Popular Party's efforts to "turn a blind eye" to the uncontrolled pollution produced by intensive agricultural activity.
Therefore, the mayor of IU-Greens insisted that it is "vital" that the City of Lorca is added to the battle against pollution by plastics that deteriorate our health, the local economy and cause irreparable damage to the environment.
In that sense, Martin explained that marine waste involves a wide range of negative impacts ranging from biological effects in the natural environment (destruction of ecosystems and biodiversity), to the safety and health of human beings.
The plastic, in its microscopic version in the form of microfiber, has been incorporated into the trophic chain and its toxic chemicals are being ingested by humans when consuming fish.
In addition, clean a beach full of waste is a significant cost to public administrations "we are paying all," he warned.
Therefore, from IU-Greens again insisted on the need to implement a local plan that fights, in a comprehensive manner, against this type of pollution.
"We need responsible farmers and courageous politicians who do not shrivel up before economic power," Martín said.
Therefore, he encouraged the municipal government to follow the path initiated by other municipalities that have approved ordinances to regulate and manage the management of plastic waste produced on farms.
"In the case of Lorca it is essential the implementation of this regulation because the pollution that occurs in our territory is largely responsible for the Regional Park Cabo Cope - Punta de Calnegre is the point of greatest accumulation of marine litter of the whole country, "he said.
Finally, Martin demanded that the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia put an end to the lack of protection suffered by the regional park, through the approval of its Plan for the Regulation of Natural Resources, which should include specific regulations to regulate the waste management of agriculture that develops within its limits.
