The councilor of Izquierda Unida-Verdes, Gloria Martín, has reiterated the requirement of her political training that the City Council recover the economic compensation that corresponds to the extraction of stone on municipal land.
The mayor of IU-Verdes reported last March that since 2012 the Consistory is not charging the fee for the use of the quarries located on the Santa Cruz mountain, the Benito felling, the Almirez strait and the Barranco de Las Loberas, all in the deputation of Zarcilla de Ramos.
Said annual profit canon is fixed at an average of 21.18 euros per cubic meter extracted.
15% of the income for this concept has to be reinvested in the maintenance of public forests and the remaining 85% must be deposited in the municipal coffers.
Martin has asked the PP municipal government to recover "what corresponds to us" and reinvest those hundreds of thousands of euros in the fight against the depopulation of the Highlands.
"We think it fair that it be used in the social and economic reactivation of the peoples of the north of Lorca, which will surely contribute to fix the population to the territory," he said.
In this regard, the councilor of IU-Greens requested that the actions be carried out after a democratic and participatory process of consultation, so that it is the neighbors themselves who establish the investment priorities.
Finally, Martin has also once again demanded the convocation of the municipal control commission on this activity, which has met only once - due to its constitution - without ever having made public the quarry census, the data on quantities extracted, its impact on the environment or the wealth it generates for the municipality.
"Lorca does not even have a municipal scale that certifies the amount of extracted mineral," explained Martin, who recalled that this is an old claim of IU-Greens "because we want to calculate accurately the compensation that should be paid by the City Council for the use of their geological resources. "
For Martín it is "essential" the reactivation of this commission to avoid the unbridled deterioration of the public forests and to control that the companies undertake the reforestation and environmental recovery plans to which they are bound by law, among other issues.
In this sense, the councilor of IU-Greens also advocated that new agreements be signed with the majority of foreign operating companies that incorporate clauses of social responsibility by which they contribute to economic and social development in the areas where they carry out their activity.
"We can not allow them to cheerfully squander the landscape and natural heritage of our municipality without Lorca being compensated for it," he concluded.
