Lorca undertakes a new informative campaign for the responsible holding of pets (26/12/2018)

The initiative of the City Council places the municipality in one of the only ones in the country that finances 100% the chipado of pets (dogs, cats and ferrets), ratifying the commitment of Lorca with the good treatment that pets deserve.

The Councilor for Health in the City of Lorca, María del Carmen Ruiz, reported that the City Council is going to immediately undertake a campaign completely free for the chipado of pets in collaboration with the veterinary establishments of the municipality and the Illustrious Official College of Veterinarians of the Region of Murcia by which the owners of 560 of these animals can implement this identification mechanism at no cost.

To benefit from the campaign must be registered in Lorca and submit to the Department of Health (Plaza Virgen de la Amargura) the National Identity Document and animal health card.

The owner will receive a voucher to be exchanged at the corresponding veterinary clinic.

The campaign will end at the end of January or when stocks last.

The veterinary clinics Cervantes, La Seda, Ovalo, San José, San Patricio, Europa, La Hoya and Virgen de las Huertas collaborate in the campaign.

Ruiz Jódar stressed that a year ago was passed Law 6/2017, of November 8, on protection and defense of companion animals of the Region of Murcia (BORM November 23, 2017) that delves into educational measures and of social awareness of the population, and penalizes uncivil and cruel behaviors with companion animals in order to eradicate these behaviors of abuse and abandonment by tightening the sanctioning regime.

It also clarifies and facilitates citizens' knowledge of the obligations they must assume regarding these animals.

One of those obligations is identification.

Thus, the owners of dogs, cats and ferrets have the obligation to identify them by means of the implantation of an electronic chip, accompanied by the corresponding identification document by authorized veterinarians.

The microchip is a painless system of easy and quick insertion that allows to find the animals in case of loss or theft and demonstrate their property throughout the life of the pet.

We must remember the legal regulations that promote responsible pet ownership, so the non-identification and / or anti-rabies vaccination of these species constitute serious infractions, so that the people who commit them will be sanctioned with economic fines that range between 1,501 and the 6,000 euros, while the abandonment of an animal is considered very serious, and will be sanctioned with a fine of 6,001 to 30,000 euros.

Since the beginning of the animal identification program, thanks to the Municipal Ordinance for the Protection and Tenure of Pets and the Animal Identification System of the Region of Murcia managed by the Official College of Veterinarians and the clinical establishments, they have been identified in Lorca 18,107 animals of which 14,450 remain active.

The Mayor of Health stressed that "from the Municipal Council we congratulate the progress that is confirmed with respect to the responsible holding of dogs in our municipality. We are talking about figures that encourage us to move forward, accentuating the work that is coming The care of our pets begins with a careful veterinary attention that includes the placement of the well-known microchips that, in addition, to identify the animal, serves to locate them in case of loss, given that the bodies and security forces , the Local Police and the animal collection company have microchip readers. "

María del Carmen Ruiz recalled that "the City Council was incorporated into the Animal Identification System of the Murcia Region, SIAMU, a database that aims to identify companion animals as a tool for facilitate the recovery of lost or stolen animals, avoid possible abandonments, promote responsible ownership, and help achieve higher levels of health and welfare of both animals and people who are related to them.

In this way, in case of a search for a lost animal, SIAMU offers the possibility of checking by entering the identification number of an animal (microchip or tattoo) if an animal is registered in its data files, giving in that case name and telephone number of the person who appears as the owner and of the veterinarian who made the identification.

It also allows an owner, who has identified an animal in SIAMU, to check all the registered data of his animal in case it turns out to be incorrect, in that case it is necessary to have the identification number and the DNI of the person who was registered as owner.

In case of incorrectness, the owner should contact the veterinarian who made the registration of the data or, failing that, another SIAMU veterinarian, since SIAMU includes exactly and exclusively those provided by the veterinarian.
