It is a size that is part of the procession of this Brotherhood, and that presented multiple deteriorations, many of them derived from the earthquakes of the year 2011 and the precipitations in the course of their parade.
The restoration has been directed by the son of the author of the sculpture, Antonio García Mengual.
The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, has handed over to the President of the Brotherhood of the Most Holy Christ of Forgiveness, Paso Morado, Fulgencio Martínez, the image of the Virgen de la Piedad, once the process of restoration and repair of this emblematic sculpture has been completed.
It is a work developed by the Municipal Historic Heritage Conservation Workshop.
We are talking about a piece that is kept in the parish church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen and was carved by the Murcian sculptor Antonio García Mengual in 1982 (Salzillo Prize), his own son who has guided the restoration as a workshop monitor municipal.
It forms a sculptural group of round shape and natural size, carved in coniferous wood on volume constructed with pieces assembled in ambo and polychrome with oils.
Regarding its iconography, the image represents the Virgin Mary sitting holding on his right knee the body of Jesus Christ after the descent of the Cross.
The municipal workshop that has been responsible for carrying out this work is composed of a monitor and 8 students.
On the part of the Local Development Council, responsibility of the mayor Sandra Martínez, it has been decided, in addition, to provide the Paso Morado with an adequate support to facilitate the transport and / or displacement of this size in the future, a structure carried out by the components of the locksmith's workshop of the City Council.
In this way, possible damages to the image of the Virgin will be avoided in the future.
The previous analysis carried out on its state of conservation exposed that the work was in a state of deficit conservation, with the following pathologies:
Large cracks were seen both at the base and in the bodies of the images, due to the movements of the structural pieces of wood, inadequate handling and abrupt changes in temperature and humidity.
At this point it is necessary to point out the forced and hurried transfer that had to be made with the sculpture after the 2011 earthquakes.
It had repaints and varnished after the original, very rusty.
Chromatic alteration due to superficial dirt.
Scratches and loss of color in the most exposed areas, such as hands and feet.
Crown of thorns very deteriorated.
Disappearance of a crystal tear.
Application of synthetic putty in holes of the base.
Incorporation for your shipments of metallic support badly crimped and dimensioned.
This technical action has managed to ensure the integral conservation of the sculpture, through the established criteria of conservation and restoration, respecting the original elements and intervening only in those aspects that produced deterioration and degradation of the whole, in order to ensure its future conservation and recovery your dignity and understanding.
With these premises the following treatments have been executed:
Sealing of fissures by injections of polyvinyl acetate.
Elimination of synthetic putties.
Reintegration of the original gear losses in lagoons and fissures, with traditional tails of organic tails similar to the original ones.
Physical-chemical cleaning to remove the layer of superficial dirt, the oxidized varnish and the punctual repaint, after a solubility test.
Differentiated chromatic reintegration.
Restoration of the crown of thorns.
Replacement of glass teardrop.
Final varnish of protection with varnish stable to oxidation and ultraviolet rays, in order to improve its conservation.
Execution of a new metallic support suitable for transport.
