Fulgencio Gil emphasizes that "you can not be playing with the present and the future of our professionals in agriculture and livestock, here we live from this, and it is an enormous irresponsibility to support those who deny us water".
The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, has demanded that the Tajo-Segura transfer, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, be shielded through a National Water Pact, a measure that will allow to clear the eternal uncertainty that some politicians, from the more absolute ignorance and irresponsibility, they are determined to launch against our land.
Here we live from this, and you can not be playing with the present and the future of Lorca.
Spain can not continue to allow this error, we must remove this slab from our people, today better than tomorrow
Fulgencio Gil has indicated that those who focus their work on ending the Tajo-Segura hide that the transfers are an example of solidarity used universally throughout the world for thousands of years.
It is about taking the water from where it is left to where it is needed, as simple as that.
Moreover, the backbone of Spain will necessarily involve a National Water Pact that includes new transfers and the interconnection of the basins in an increasingly closer timeframe.
This is evidence that no political selfishness can cover.
Fulgencio Gil has said that the Tajo-Segura is not simply a transfer of water, it is a channel of life, an example of coexistence and solidarity, a tool of authentic territorial structuring in Spain.
Lorca are fully aware of the importance of the water provided by the Tajo-Segura transfer.
We want guarantees and security for our farmers and ranchers.
If we want to have a competitive agri-food sector we have to support our people.
Every drop of water from the transfer our farmers transform into employment, opportunities for development and promotion of the economy.
The First Edil has expressed his support "without fissures" to the request of the lorquinos irrigators so that the State Company of Agricultural Infrastructures (SEIASA) proceed to the execution of the series of directed works that the Lorca farmers need for the modernization of the consolidated irrigated land of our municipal term.
We are talking about some works whose objective is to contribute to complete the total modernization of irrigable areas.
We must bear in mind that the investment required for this purpose is expected to reach 70 million, however the package of works that Lorca irrigators need peremptorily around 50.
The Mayor has explained that the works that irrigators demand from SEIASA are justice, very necessary, and a commitment that must be met with our farmers.
These actions are the most urgent, and have to do with the use of available resources, specifically to continue advancing in the improvement of infrastructure.
We are talking about the construction of irrigation ponds, reservoirs, pipelines and impulses necessary to modernize 12,500 hectares of our consolidated irrigation.
This country has to be aware of the special importance of the investments made to meet the needs of our farmers.
Now is the time for the State administration to do its part and face the needs that the sector presents.
This Mayor will always be with our people, the thousands of families that earn their living plucking the best and highest quality food that we put into the pantries throughout Europe from the hard land.
If we want quality fruits and vegetables, they can not deny our people the water they so badly need and the investments they so badly need.
We ask that you support those who take this land forward and avoid with their daily work that can advance the desertification of our soils.
Lorca, pioneer in the transfers of our country.
The First Mayor recalled that precisely Lorca are the ones who have been most aware in the recent history of this country of the benefits provided by the transfers.
Remember that already in the sixteenth century we claimed the construction of the transfer from the rivers Castril and Guardal (also known as Canal de Murcia), a project that was not executed, but that had different plans under the reigns of Carlos I, Felipe II, Felipe III, Felipe IV, Felipe V and Carlos III, and that raised to bring water from the surroundings of Huéscar (Granada) to the field of Cartagena.
The Mayor of Lorca has stressed that the transfers are a resource used worldwide and find examples in California (United States), Australia, James Bay (Canada), Germany, France, United Kingdom, Greece, Italy, Turkey, going back to its use from the Assyrian civilization.
