"You say you love your children above all else, but they are stealing your future before your very eyes."
The devastating phrase of Greta Thunberg, the Swedish student who started this movement, should make us reflect on what future we want our descendants, says Chechu Muñoz
Chechu Muñoz, spokesperson for Izquierda Joven Lorca, calls on students from Lorca to join the mobilizations that will take place today to demand a radical change in our way of life that curbs the current climate change that is made every year more evident.
According to the manifesto of Youth for the Climate (translation into Spanish of Fridays For Futere), we are at a key moment in our history.
We have to choose between policies that do not respect the fundamental rights of people and that attack our environment or choose to take a step forward and demand measures that improve the quality of life of citizens, that respect our environment and that do not endanger our future.
We need to start from now, because the consequences of climate change in our country are clearly visible, the possibility that the global level of the sea rise three meters from here to the year 2100 is real, 74 percent of the Spanish soil is in process of desertification and it is expected that 20% of what is safe today will be at risk within 50 years.
In turn, the acidification of the ocean and the change that marine currents are experiencing are modifying the distribution of the species, and the impact of the increase in temperature and CO2 emissions is triggering alterations in the regime of winds, outcrops or evaporation of water with worrying results.
As Naomi Klein explained: "It's not just about changing the light bulbs, but the economic model", and the best way to achieve this, says Muñoz, is for young people across the country to take to the streets to demand public powers a turn of 180 degrees in economic policies and that these are oriented towards a sustainable development that guarantees a future for the planet and the people and species that inhabit it.
For that reason, the youth organization of IU in Lorca will support all the initiatives and mobilizations that are developed in our municipality and encourages the rest of young people to do the same, because "there is no planet B".
