The president of the Community, Fernando Lopez Miras, today praised the capacity of the regional agricultural sector to promote organic farming, which now exceeds 80,000 hectares in the region, "being one of the largest economic and productive engines, as well as a guarantee of future and care for the environment. "
López Miras visited the facilities of the Cooperativa Sagrado Corazón de Jesús (Sacoje) in the Lorca district of La Hoya, which produces and sells mainly broccoli, lettuce, melon, watermelon, broccoli and cabbage.
"Crops that promote a higher quality, more sustainable and healthier agriculture," he said.
The Region has the largest area of ​​organic farming in the European Union, in proportion to its territory, with 22.2 percent of the land under cultivation.
The organic products that are most produced are nuts, with 30,000 hectares;
cereals, with 14,500;
and the vineyard, with about 12,000 hectares.
In the field of Cartagena there are 3,000 hectares of organic farming, and highlight the horticultural, citrus and almond trees.
Sociedad Cooperativa Sacoje has more than 3,000 hectares of crops in the Guadalentín valley, 500 of which are organic farming.
Almost 90 percent of its production is exported to the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Holland, Poland, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, France, Belgium, Portugal and Italy, with England being the main destination, with 70 percent of the production.
Last October Sacoje celebrated its 30th anniversary in an act attended by the president of the Community.
