The PSOE requests the enhancement of the Argaric archaeological site of Almendricos and the honorary recognition of Professor Ayala Juan (22/03/2019)

The councilor of the PSOE in the City of Lorca, María Antonia García Jiménez has announced that they will request, through a motion, the enhancement of the archaeological site of "El Rincón", located in the hamlet of Almendricos.

The mayor has shown that it is a site of the culture of El Argar (2000-1500 BC) owned by the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia since 1986 and opened as BIC "for its special significance within the Culture of Bronze in the Region of Murcia and the need for protection ".

The excavation of this argárico town in plain was motivated by the finding in 1977 of four burial cysts after making an agricultural detour.

"The first two excavation campaigns were co-directed by Mr. Javier García del Toro and Ms. Mª Manuela Ayala Juan, both professors of the University of Murcia".

The latter, he recalls, "took over the direction of archaeological excavations from 1979 to the end of the nineties, documenting six houses and twelve burials."

García Jiménez recalled that in 1999 "work was carried out for its valorization by the CARM and at the end of 2010 by the City of Lorca".

However, at present "great abandonment is observed in its maintenance", so "its valuation should be reinitiated, since at present it is with evident signs of abandonment".

"The City of Lorca, should consider incorporating into itineraries of the excursions planned by the educational centers of the Region of Murcia, and include them or offer them within the itinerary of the so-called cultural tourism", all with the aim of publicizing their past and the importance of such settlement, as well as to signify Lorca within the thematic and specialized itineraries.

Similarly, the mayor insists that as the owner of the site, the Autonomous Community should be involved in the value of it, as is being done with other sites, such as the Bastida de Totana.

I acknowledge the teacher and archaeologist Doña María Manuela Ayala Juan

García Jiménez pointed out that the location of the argárico deposit in plain is due to the teacher and archaeologist Doña María Manuela Ayala Juan, for which the City of Lorca has a "moral debt" with her.

Therefore, they propose that the next honors and distinctions of the year 2019 Lorca honor Ayala Juan with the title of Adoptive Daughter, in addition to dedicating a public space in Almendricos with the name of this prestigious archaeologist.

Finally, propose that the City of Lorca, together with the Department of Prehistory of the University of Murcia, constitute a Center for Cultural Studies Argar, whose headquarters is the Archaeological Museum of Lorca, and that in our city can also be used, institutionally, the nomenclature of "Lorca, capital of the Argar culture".
