IU-Verdes insists on the need to order the livestock sector in Lorca to control the effects of the 'bubble' (04/09/2019)

Councilwoman Gloria Martín, asked that the solution to provide livestock water to farms be made "without legal shortcuts", without compromising the transfer Tajo-Segura, with guarantees for farmers but also taking into account that it is a good " scarce "in an area that will increasingly have more problems to face the challenges of persistent drought and climate change

The Association of Sanitary Defense of Lorca (Adespolorca) has recognized that some farmers in the municipality are using water from the Irrigation Community to supply their farms.

A situation incompatible with the Tajo-Segura Transfer Memorandum that IU-Verdes denounced in October 2017 even in the Environmental Prosecutor's Office of the Region of Murcia and for which this party was labeled "reckless" by the then government team PP municipal.

The councilor of this training, Gloria Martín has alluded to a recent statement from Adespolorca in which this association encourages farmers "be of any kind" to request the granting of "livestock water" before September 30 because last this period, "anyone who has not requested it will be in an out of order situation."

For the mayor of IU this is just one more example that affects the urgent need to order an important sector for the local economy and in which the farmers themselves are affected by an important "legal insecurity".

In this regard, he warned that the integrated environmental authorizations of some farms could even be revoked if the consumption is not justifiably justified on the basis of what is stated in the projects, a control whose responsibility falls in some cases to the semi-public company Aguas de Lorca .

Therefore, he asked that the solution to provide livestock water to farms be made "without legal shortcuts", without compromising the transfer, with guarantees for farmers but also taking into account that it is a "scarce" good in an area that "every time it will have more problems to face the challenges of the persistent drought and the climatic change".

In this regard, Martín recalled that the million pigs that exist in Lorca need at least three cubic hectometers of water per year, more than the concession authorized by the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura to the lorquín irrigators from the desalination plant of Águilas (2 , 4 hm3 / year).

"It is a very important consumption and we believe that it is necessary to establish an end to the infinite demand for water," he said.

"1,500 farms are enough in Lorca. We must ensure the sustainability of those that already exist and that are compatible with other land uses and, above all, with citizens' rights, but this model cannot continue to stretch without limits," he explained.

In that sense, Gloria Martín criticized the commitment of the Minister of Water, Agriculture and Livestock, Antonio Luengo, to "prioritize" the streamlining of the administrative procedures that farmers have to complete for the processing of the environmental authorizations of their facilities.

In line, he reminded him that he is also responsible for the regional Environment portfolio, "even if he forgets it," and that "along that path it will be impossible to reconcile the interests of the sector with the environmental defense."

"We are on the verge of saturation, and instead of putting head and ordering the situation of what we already have, the regional leaders continue in their line of fattening this bubble with their backs to a social majority that claims that their rights are enforced health, to an adequate environment and to preserve the natural resources that belong to everyone, "he lamented.
