IU-Greens calls for an urban reforestation plan and the creation of four large parks in Lorca (18/09/2019)

Councilwoman Gloria Martín will defend in plenary the launch of a network of large thematic playgrounds located in the Virgen de las Huertas, the surroundings of the Huerto de la Rueda and La Hoya, as well as a peri-urban forest park in collaboration with the centers Educational

His training will also request that the City Council promote the cataloging of Cultural Interest Assets with the subcategory of historic garden to the tree-lined promenade of Las Alamedas.

The councilor of the United Left-Greens, Gloria Martín, will raise to the next municipal plenary session a motion to make Lorca a "more livable and human" city, in addition to contributing positively to the environment, reducing high temperatures and polluting emissions.

For this reason, the mayor will ask the City Council to draw up a Comprehensive Reforestation Plan for the urban area, based on the recommendations of the Quality Plan of the Urban Landscape of Lorca (PCPUL), which should include the planting of trees of sufficient size to complete the recommendations of the World Health Organization, which are of one tree for every three inhabitants.

This organization also estimates that in cities there must be a minimum of 15 square meters of green areas per inhabitant.

However, Lorca has only one third (5 square meters per inhabitant) with respect to the standards suggested by WHO.

Given the low proportion of parks and gardens with respect to their size, the motion will include the creation of three large green spaces in the town center and one more in the district of La Hoya.

Specifically, IU-Verdes will request the construction of a network of large thematic playgrounds.

The idea is to launch three throughout the current corporate mandate to expand later.

For its location, one of them will take into account the historical claim of the residents of Virgen de las Huertas, who in 2010 was promised to create a new "green lung" on a plot of about 6,000 m2 located between the Virgen de las Huertas mall and the Pulgara road.

The other could be located on the plot located in front of the Huerto de la Rueda where the LIMUSA facilities were.

The third corresponds to a demand from the residents of La Hoya, one of the most populated districts of the municipality and where more children live (418 inhabitants from 0 to 14 years old), and that has a significant deficit in this area.

For the design of these spaces, Martín suggested following the model of thematic playgrounds carried out by the municipality of Alcobendas (Madrid), a pioneering initiative in Europe that offers an alternative to children's leisure to prevent children from being locked in hooked houses to game consoles.

The fourth proposal would be destined to the creation of a peri-urban forest park whose trees, in collaboration with the primary and secondary education centers, would be planted by the children of the municipality in order to raise environmental awareness in the younger generations.

IU-Verdes will also ask that the City Council promote, for its peculiarity and landscape quality, the cataloging of Cultural Interest with the subcategory of historic garden to the tree-lined promenade of Las Alamedas.

And finally, it will request that it carry out an awareness and awareness campaign on the importance of woodland in urban environments.

"We hear with some frequency that there are neighbors who request the cutting of a tree next to their building because it creates discomfort, when in reality the trees are great allies to mitigate the effects of pollution and climate change," he said.

An aspect to take into account in a city that regularly suffers episodes of tropospheric ozone contamination in which the objective values for the protection of human health are exceeded.

Martín explained, for example, that a single large tree is capable of absorbing up to 150 kilos of CO2 per year.

In addition, they cool the temperature of the city up to two and a half degrees, being able to cut up to 50 percent the need to use the air conditioning in the summer.

They also have important effects on health, for example in the prevention of skin cancer, since they reduce exposure to UV-B rays by approximately 50 percent, thereby providing protection, especially to children in schools and playgrounds, where they spend a lot of time outdoors.

For all these reasons, the mayor of IU-Verdes believes that reforestation and the creation of new tree masses should become a priority and permanent activity on the Town Hall's agenda, protecting and expanding natural capital as the best inheritance for future generations.
