In his hawk-like penetrating gaze in search of his prey, he could almost guess through his blue eyes, which would be the greatest.
Just 16 years old, he looked for a coach to get ready and for those things of destiny, he found someone who not only prepared and taught him, but became practically a son.
Just a year later he had become an exceptional athlete, making incredible marks.
José Luís decides to try his fortune in a body of legend, the French Foreign Legion, a body with a history, which would freeze the blood of many, of a strong discipline and corporal punishment.
They presume to go where nobody wants.
The fact is that José, as we know him affectionately, leaves for France and gets ready, getting all the tests with number one.
He began his four-month instruction very hard, infernal in which hunger and physical and psychological abuse, were present day by day, but in his mind an idea had been installed, he was not satisfied with having managed to enter the French Foreign Legion.
To his adventurous and dreamy spirit, something told him that this was not his place.
Leave the legion two weeks before finishing the instruction.
He returns to Lorca from his childhood, and tells his coach, with whom he had long had one with ephemeral conversation, that he wanted to try in the US army.
I remember that I listened very carefully, and said "where do you want to go?".
There was a silence that could be cut, just a few seconds later he replied, "I will enter the Green Berets."
Well I said, you don't speak English, you are not American, you don't have a residence permit, you don't have a job, you lack studies, as you will see "we are left over".
His response was restrictive, he simply said "I'm leaving in two months."
I only told him, "we have two months of work left, let's do it."
Said and done, two months later I was traveling to Texas with 600 euros and a lot of illusions.
Thank God for another day of stepping on American soil, he found work in construction, which helped him to stay, enroll to learn English perfectly, and finish higher education.
What I refer to briefly, it cost Jose the whopping almost four very hard years, working between ten and twelve hours a day, all in order to make his dream come true.
I don't count what I had to fight to get the papers, the interviews with migration, the investigations and interrogations of the FBI, finally another bureaucratic hell.
Having overcome all this, it was to make his dream come true.
As always with that warrior spirit, willing to face whatever is necessary, he goes to a recruiting office.
There the sergeant in charge of enlisting the young people tells him that he is the first Spanish who enlists, and that he had no record of any Spanish in the American army.
After some very complete medical tests, the psychological ones arrive, and finally the physical ones where he manages to be the best again.
He is currently assigned to one of the Army's most operational units, specifically the Airbone based at Ford Brang in North Carolina.
Jose has become the first Spaniard to get into the US armed forces.
