To the Lorca society and especially to the young people to join the CONCENTRATION FOR THE CLIMATE, which will take place tomorrow Friday, September 26, at 11.30 in the Alameda de los Columnes.

We believe that Lorca is a good place to organize a specific act of joining the strike against the climate crisis that is taking place these days throughout the planet.

It is our way of adding the support of organizations and residents of the municipality committed to the fight against climate change and environmental degradation.

Lorca is one of the municipalities of the Region of Murcia most affected by the effects of pollution and the destruction of our natural environment by the hand of man.

We have sad and worrying records: We have become the city of the European Union with the highest levels of tropospheric ozone pollution and the Cabo Cope-Puntas de Calnegre Regional Park is also one of the largest landfills in our continent.

We are affected by the over-exploitation of aquifers, by the contamination of the subsoil by the massive dumping of slurry, by the destruction of the native fauna and flora, and we are seriously threatened by the phenomenon of desertification, among other issues.

The alarm voices arrive not only from environmental organizations.

A few weeks ago, an audit report from the Court of Auditors gave the City Council a serious tug due to the lack of implementation of measures to stop air pollution, acoustics, lighting or that has to do with selective collection of waste

We start from a very unfavorable position in what has to do with respect and preservation of our environment.

But we also face a global phenomenon, that of climate change, which is not an entelechy, but a real threat to Lorca and its inhabitants where it has already shown its devastating effects.

Throughout this century, Murcia, and with it Lorca, will go from being a semi-arid region to arid: with loss of fertile soil, lower rainfall, more pronounced heat waves and more severe cold drops.

The rise in temperatures will require greater water consumption by crops and there are very worrying scenarios that are also linked to residential aspects such as the fact that sea level rise, which throughout this century is expected to be one meter, seriously jeopardize the existence of the town of Puntas de Calnegre.

Lorca has its own unique "Amazon".

Its coast, which must be protected from deforestation and environmental aggressions concerned;

its prelitoral mountain ranges, such as that of Almenara, victims of breakage and environmental protection, which puts at risk the survival of unique and emblematic species such as the black turtle;

a valley, that of Guadalentín, flooded with agricultural plastics;

and high districts under increasing pressure from the livestock industry, which threatens to splash it with macrocebaderos that overexploit aquifers and pollute the soil, preventing the development of sustainable alternatives, such as ecotourism or organic farming.

Climate change, we insist, is a global problem.

But its origin and consequences are also visible in Lorca.

Therefore, it is necessary to implement local actions, as well as to have the assistance of all administrations and the involvement of all citizens to curb their effects before we reach a point of no return.

And we could not understand that those who have in their hand to alleviate this situation do nothing to guarantee the future of the next generations.
