The Councilors for Environment and Transportation in the City of Lorca for the Popular Party, Pedro Mondéjar and Juan Miguel Bayonas, have demanded that the current mayor gather in the next few hours the Local Air Panel so that it does not happen again last Saturday , and have stressed that several weeks ago Mr Mateos was already claimed to immediately constitute this working group to agree on the municipal measures and actions to be carried out in the event of episodes in which air quality incidents are recorded.
It is evident that the measures imposed unilaterally by the current local government were improvisation and also very poorly communicated, in a precipitous manner and without leaving any capacity for reaction to citizens.
The only thing that the current mayor got with what he did on Saturday was to turn the town center of Lorca into a mousetrap, in the face of the disbelief of all citizens, most of whom did not know what was happening.
The commercial and hospitality sector was also directly affected, which was also not informed of what was happening, and whose sales plummeted because of the negligence of the current local government.
Of course, things are not done.
This serious error is a direct consequence of the lack of foresight and management of the current local government, which every time it has to deal with situations of this type shows a worrying inefficiency.
Closing the streets to traffic without warning citizens in advance generated absolute chaos and traffic jams throughout the city.
This mayor only got the opposite effect, since the traffic jams caused by the detours that people have to make with their cars, generated more pollution and made the situation worse.
This demonstrates that this local government does not work, is exhausted and, in addition, imposed the measures contained in the electoral program of the PP, as was the establishment of the deterrent car park in the Huerto de la Rueda with a shuttle bus service.
We must indicate that the current mayor already knew several days before this situation could occur, and absolutely nothing was communicated to the citizens.
No official communication channel of the city council said anything about this possibility, and did not warn Lorca about the measures that would have to be established in that case.
People were not prepared, and that they have had a lot of time to do it.
The reality is that this government team pulled improvisation and occurrences because they were not prepared at all.
Lorca cannot afford to continue to lack its own air quality protocol, knowing, as everyone here knows, that our proximity to North Africa motivates periodic entries of suspended dust clouds, which cause the rise of PM10 particles.
The popular have pointed out that the City Council has to offer a blunt and rigorous response to these types of episodes, based on scientific criteria and analysis, and that response should have already been articulated through a local protocol, which the current mayor has not yet done.
We want the Local Air Panel to meet, to have the participation of all groups related to the matter and in which the most effective measures, including the presence of municipal political groups, are agreed upon by consensus. who have not yet had the deference to consult.
Juan Miguel Bayonas has reiterated the proposal of the PP of Lorca that urban transport is free for Lorca when there are episodes of pollution that require the activation of level 2. This is one of the measures that the Spanish municipalities of more than 50,000 inhabitants are adopting, within the global strategy of defense of the environment and fight against the contamination that is being developed in Spain under the declaration of the climatic and environmental emergency.
This is a measure taken in response to the general consensus of the scientific community, which demands urgent action to safeguard the environment, health and safety of citizens.
We bet that Lorca demonstrate the commitment and priority given to these actions.
Juan Miguel Bayonas has insisted that this measure would be easy and quick to apply, given that currently urban transport does not depend on any company as in other locations, but is being managed directly by the City Council.
We are talking about an action that is already being carried out to combat this type of impact on air quality in cities with similar characteristics to ours, taking the closest example to the municipality of Murcia.
From the PP we believe that it would be an effective measure and would encourage citizens to leave their vehicles and take advantage of the urban transport service to carry out their journeys, contributing to reducing polluting emissions from cars and motorcycles.
