The Local Police warns of the increase in online scams and frauds (28/03/2020)

In some cases that have already been reported, the victim "receives a text message on his mobile phone indicating what he has to do to reactivate his bank account, temporarily blocked."

The Councilor for Citizen Security of the City of Lorca, José Luis Ruiz Guillén, has reported the proliferation, in recent days, of scams through the Internet.

The mayor explained that the Corps and Security Forces have learned that in the face of the health crisis in which we find ourselves and the decree of the state of alarm, the existence of some scams or frauds on the Internet is being verified.

José Luis Ruiz Guillén recalled that "home confinement is forcing many citizens to carry out any procedure electronically or also go to the network to do their shopping."

In addition, for some weeks many citizens have received a text message on their mobile that alerts them that "their bank account has been temporarily blocked", so they provide you with a link in which to reactivate their account.

In reality, the councilor explained, "it is a scam with the aim of supplanting the identity of the users and getting their data since the portal to which the link takes you asks for information such as the DNI, the number of their mobile phone or the keys with which you usually access online banking ".

It should be remembered that before buying or hiring we must identify if we are doing it in a trusted online store in which a section called "Legal notice", "Terms of use" or "Privacy policy" where the fiscal data is indicated and contact of the responsible company.

In addition, give us the possibility that your data may or may not be used or sent to another entity, as well as asking for your consent to install cookies on your computers.

It is always recommended by the authorities not to open emails from unknown users, to be suspicious of those that are poorly written or that contain misspellings.

In case the mail comes from a legitimate bank, it will never contain links to your login page or attached documents and be very careful when following links or downloading attachments in emails, SMS, messages on WhatsApp or social networks, even if they are from known contacts.

Among the most common frauds is phishing or identity theft, through which a scammer impersonates a trusted person or company through an apparently official electronic communication (a bank, transport companies, the tax agency, health authorities, etc.), with the aim that the recipient of the mail enters certain information, managing to infect your computer;

carding consisting of fraudulent use of valid credit card numbers, so it is advisable to periodically check the movements of your bank accounts;

fake web pages in which when making the fake purchase they subtract your personal data;

Email scams in which fake distributors pose as legitimate to get you to make payments on accounts they control.

And finally, from the Municipal Consumer Information Office of Lorca (OMIC) they will be able to attend, by telephone, all those situations in which citizens believe that they may have been swindled in recent days to whom they will help since a full coordination from this municipal service with the Police.
