IU-Verdes defends its leadership in defending the environment in Lorca (05/06/2020)

Councilors Pedro Sosa and Gloria Martín, have stressed that their party has made environmentalism a "fundamental" and "inalienable" flag, that other formations only support "mouthpiece" and without fulfilling the commitments adopted in plenary session The councilors of Izquierda Unida-Verdes in Lorca, Pedro Sosa and Gloria Martín, have taken advantage of the celebration of World Environment Day to review the most important challenges facing the municipality in this matter. Sosa, spokesman for the municipal group, has assured that IU-Verdes is, "without a doubt", the local political party that "defends ecology more and better", of which they have made in Lorca "one of our main flags", together with the fight for pacifism, equality or civil and labor rights.

"Those are our brands," he assured. In this regard, Sosa highlighted an initiative defended by its formation almost a quarter of a century ago, in 1996, and which was unanimously approved by the plenary session of the municipal Corporation of the time.

It was a decalogue for the protection of the environment that condenses the main needs of Lorca in this area that, to this day, "are still in force". This decalogue included, for example, the protection of the unique natural spaces of Lorca, with special emphasis on the protection of the coastal section.

Many of them later benefited from the entry into force of the Natura 2000 Network.

Despite this, some are still at risk for illegal breaks, the installation of livestock industries, or the illegal exploitation of wells and aquifers. Other aspects contemplated in said document and that remain completely unresolved twenty-five years later are the rational use of water and the purification of urban and industrial waters; the fight against desertification; the protection of the Lorca garden against urban interests; the preservation of biodiversity; the naturalization of urban spaces; the promotion of environmental education programs; or the commitment to sustainable development models in the municipality. For Sosa, if the City Council had complied with these agreements, "we would have avoided a whole host of environmental problems related to pollution, or to the loss of fertile soil and biodiversity." Pedro Sosa stressed that environmental policy "has been, is and will continue to be" something "essential" and "inalienable" for IU-Verdes Lorca, who will continue to fight for the agreements reached to materialize.

"We will always be on the side of preserving our environment," he concluded. In this regard, Councilor Gloria Martín recalled that, only in the last four years, her training has obtained the support of other municipal groups to carry out motions aimed at promoting an ordinance for the management of agricultural plastics, to reverse the flow of garbage that They end up on our coast, to implement a plan for reforestation and creation of green areas in Lorca, to promote organic agriculture and livestock in the Highlands of Lorca, to avoid the construction of a marine estate in front of the coves of Puntas de Calnegre, to start a thematic center on desertification and drought, to restore the Guadalentín river forest or establish an odor map to curb odor pollution, among others. However, the mayor regretted that, like the historical demands of IU-Greens, these most recent initiatives also continue to "accumulate dust in a drawer".

All because the last two local governments have not complied with those mandates of the municipal corporation.

"It hurts us the support of mouthpiece to plans and actions that we consider of vital importance and that later are nothing," he said, adding that "it is time for this to change." Although there are many environmental challenges in which IU-Verdes works, Martín highlighted among the main ones the fight against ozone pollution, the real protection of protected natural areas, the approval of the Cape Cope Natural Resources Management Plan- Calnegre and the reconciliation of residential and livestock land uses.

On this last question, Martín announced that in the coming weeks a "definitive advance" must be made in the modification of the General Plan for Municipal Planning to "shield" the rural population centers from the "senseless" and "unsustainable" proliferation of macro-farms.
